Suggested read for everyone. It wont be an easy or fun one though.

I wanted to learn about different theories of rejection so I bought the Kindle version of this book.

In the book it contains many different aspects of rejection, a lot of which I hadn't even thought qualified as rejection but I did still appreciate the wide variety of topics. I would suggest this for most people as a great tool for self-reflection.

I will warn readers that at times, I became bored with this book and found that I had to push myself to continue reading because it seems so jumbled together with no clear rhyme or reason for switching topics. Frequently, I couldn't resist thinking, "are we still talking about rejection?"

Still, it's a recommended read as I learned a lot of things I didn't know.

Historians of magic, science: if you can find it, get it!

Dawes work is the most successful and interesting meld of history of stage magic and history of science, medicine and technology I have yet found. This book is packed with leads to interesting research projects focusing on the relationship between entertainment and science. Highlights include: Ch 5, Dawes examples demonstrate that the relationship between quackery, entertainment and "legitimate" medicine is not the straightforward set of compartmentalized disciplines that both historians of the sciences and historians of popular culture and entertainment have presumed; Ch 6, Dawes research clearly shows how not only was magic influenced by Science, Technology and Medicine (STM), but STM was influenced by magic performance, as exemplified in the case of the adoption of inhalation anesthetic; Ch 7 Dawes here focuses on the relationships between technology, optics and entertainment that contributed to motion picture development. There is also mention of magicians and science education which provides and interesting connection between the traditionally disparate areas of science and entertainment.
This book ranks in my top 10 all time favorites.

About the Author
Nancy Frey, Ph.D., a Professor at San Diego State University received the 2008 Early Career Achievement Award from the National Reading Conference. Dr. Frey has published in The Reading Teacher, English Journal, Remedial and Special Education, and Educational Leadership. She has co-authored more than fifty books on English Learners (Language Learners in the English Classroom), assessment (Checking for Understanding), writing (Scaffolded Writing Instruction), literacy (Reading for Information in Elementary School) and vocabulary (Learning Words Inside and Out). Dr. Frey teaches a variety of courses on reading instruction and literacy in content areas, classroom management, and supporting students with diverse learning needs. She also was a third grade classroom teacher.

Good Text for my Purposes at Work: ESOL

I needed more research on ESOL. This work on techniques and methods for ESOL students and our means to produce sustainable and meaningful talking points is sound. I already knew all of this, but when presenting trainings, this text presents the material well. No more turn and talk for ELs who are beginning! Ugh! Hate what 'all" teachers do for 'all' students 'all' the time.

When is differentiation really going to hit home? If you need a text to help you show, simply, a set of methods to deliver accountable talk to ELs and "all" students, I felt this was sound and targeted.

A wonderful and delightful book of love poems for anyone who appreciates beautiful poetry.

I have purchased and read numerous copies of “Everyman’s library pocket poets” over the years. I recently bought this 256 page hardcover edition of “Love Poems” selected and edited by Peter Washington. The wonderful book has selections from poets of the past and contemporary poets. This book is organized into the following topic areas:

Definitions and persuasions, love and poetry, praising the loved one, pleasures and pains, fidelity and inconstancy, absence, estrangement and parting, and love past. This unique collection has some of the most beautiful and enduring love poems I have ever read. All the most famous and loved poets are included in this book of love poems. The most quoted writer of all time William Shakespeare, the legendary Emily Dickinson, the dark and brooding Edgar Allan Poe, one of the most read poets Robert Frost and numerous other great poets have selections in this collection. These love poems are from poets around the world which makes it a must have volume for your own personal library collection of poetry books.

If you love poetry this is a must collection of “Love Poems” you will want to own. This short review cannot do justice to this wonderful volume.

An Understanding of Love

I am naturally drawn to tiny books and this book was no exception. I saw it and instantly fell in love with the red library binding and gold embossing on the fabric cover. This is one of those books you want to carry around with you in your pocket to read on a sunny day while sitting on a park bench.

While most of the poems were new to me, I did find lines to make any poet drown in the pure beauty of words. "In My Sky at Twilight" is a paraphrase of the 30th poem in Raindranath Tagore's The Gardener. The images are lush and mingle emotion with nature. "In Former Days" by Bhartrhari (5th Century) is witty and beautiful in its simplicity. Two lovers are so in love they forget their separateness and then drift back to being "you" and "me." The poem is a mere four lines and yet it provides a intimate look at how lovers feel when in love and when they drift apart. I loved a few lines in "The Palanquin" where a butterfly lands on delicate skin and transfers colors onto the lover's skin.

This bookwas much smaller than I expected (my own fault and not necessarily a flaw) but it is filled with wonderful, wonderful love poems. I keep it on my coffee table for whenever I feel the whim to read a poem and I've read quite a few in this book. They picked some very good poems from a broad array of poets.

Rebuilding Postwar History

Padraic Kenney offers a bottom-up view of Poland's postwar reconstruction that, originally, was based more on necessity than ideology. The momentum toward social as well as physical rebuilding was shared by the entire population, and "stalinist" mobilization was as much voluntary as conscripted. Only as the United Workers' Party took substance and consolidated its ascendancy did a miltarized organization of the workers become necessary.

One might take issue with Kenney's use of the term "stalinist" - one could easily employ "bolshevik" as well - but he insists on it to keep his frame time-specific. The social form under construction was the Soviet system of nationalized labor, along with new factories and infrastructure; the mass modernization of a largely pre-industrial nation. And true enough, it was only through this method that rapid results could be achieved in such short time.

In Poland, however, there was a strong pre-war workers' culture already in existence, that only partially identified with the Party's top-down model of a workers' state. This contradiction forms the basis of Kenney's analysis of postwar Poland. "Workers' opposition" was in fact a recurring problem from the earliest days of Bolshevism, wherever existing workers' organizations butted heads with the Vanguard Party. Solidarity was thus no anamoly in either Poland or the former socialist bloc; but it was unlikely in other socializing nations without an existing workers' tradition, like Bulgaria or - as he shows - frontier regions of Poland. This is the difference between "bolshevism" - the mobilization of pre-existing workers' organizations under Party leadership - and "stalinism." In the latter the working class itself was being created - virtually from scratch, along with industrialization itself - from a migrant peasant population, where the Party's "guiding hand" was the only social and political glue.

In keeping his focus on the matrix of struggle and cooperation between workers and state, Kenney somewhat shirks the non-class pulls of nationalism, religion (and anti-Semitism) that complicated the Party's "mission." "Reactionary" interests thus often found their way into workers' protests. He is also offbase when he suggests that stalinist Poland was "unreformable." In fact, Peoples' Poland was, as he shows, no longer stalinist after 1956; and was already a mixed economy before the Great Change of 1989. That was precisely why the transition was so smooth.

But Kenney adequately demonstrates that the Revolution of 1944 was indeed real in its determination to reshape Polish society. As depicted here it was one variant among many, not particularly "evil" despite cold war demonology, and was no less genuine than postwar reconstruction elsewhere.

Love this series!

I have thoroughly enjoyed each book in this series! Each time I read the next one it becomes my favorite and I adore the main characters and all the supporting characters -- you just have to start at the first of this series because the stories all intertwine (this author is a genius). Eagerly awaiting the next story!

Another great read by Charity Parkerson! I enjoyed reading Kieran and Henley's story! In this book, I loved how the author just jumped right into it. No long drawn out story of the main characters get together. I'm looking forward to reading Shattered!

Henley was such a wreck it was amazing to see him pull himself together

A very well written story. Henley was such a wreck it was amazing to see him pull himself together. He really put himself out there with Kieran. Kieran is real supportive and able to take control of Henley and help him not spin out of control. Since it was a novella it didn't get as in depth as I would have liked. However it was still a good read.

This book was short, simple, and to the point. Written for non-engineering technicians, this book perfectly explains the basic theory, design, and operation of ion exchange systems - primarily water deionization.
It the newest revision the author has added a troubleshooting section as well as a technical reference section dealing with unit conversions and acid/base concentration conversions.

A Remarkable Woman...

Harriet Tubman is my hero. There will never be enough said about this remarkable woman. Her life should be an inspiration to many.
She suffered abuse as a slave, deprivation and handicap. Unable to read or write she became the Moses of her people, leading over 300 black slaves to freedom. Her contribution didn't stop there, however. She lectured about the evils of slavery and taught many. She served in the Civil War as a nurse, a scout, and a spy. She founded a home for poor, sick, and needy black citizens.
The Story of Harriet Tubman, Conductor of the Underground Railroad is an excellent book. I rate it Five Stars for readability, content, historical value, character training, biography, attention to historic detail, portrayal of an American woman, and truth.
There are other books about Harriet Tubman, and one day I may read and love them all, but this book was the right book at the right time for the kids that I am presently working with. This is a book that could challenge YOU to do and be YOUR best.

Amazing story for all ages!

This is a fantastic book! I used this with my second grade students during my Black History unit in February and the students couldn't get enough of it. Harriet Tubman really is an inspiring woman who suffered so much yet found strength within herself to help countless others: from the slaves she led to freedom, to the sick, poor and needy that she selflessly served out of her own home, to the wounded soldiers that she nursed to health during the Civil War. Absolutely amazing.

I would recommend this to teachers of all ages and anyone looking for a great story about Harriet Tubman and her remarkable life.

I thought that The Story of Harriet Tubman by Kate McMullan was a really good book. It made me realize how hard she worked for her freedom and how she helped many other slaves become free. I've heard about her story but I never knew what kinds of things she went through.
It made me realize how lucky I am to be in a "free land". In all I really liked the book. The story had a lot of action in it and each chapter unraveled another adventure. Like how she knew the swamps by heart and how she was a part of the Civil War. It was a really good book and it tells you a little bit more about Harriet Tubman and her family. I would recommend this book to people who like non-fiction action and adventure.
