About the Author
Rob Brooker (Ph.D., Yale University) received his B.A. in biology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. At Harvard, he studied lactose permease, the product of the lacY gene of the lac operon. He continues working on transporters at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and has an active research laboratory. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Brooker teaches undergraduate courses in biology, genetics, and cell biology. In addition to many other publications, he has written two undergraduate genetics texts published by McGraw-Hill: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 4th edition, copyright 2012, and Concepts of Genetics, copyright 2012.

I have this and love it ...so this was a gift for a friend having major surgery. Print is very easy to read--cover is comfortable and lovely to hold-- very soft. Scriptures all written out so easy to read Bible scriptures right on same page. I think this is my favorite devotional Ever...and I have several. This version hard to find -- thanks to Amazon for giving me a source to order it from! Makes a terrific gift but get one for yourself too!

This book is very beautifully done. It's cover has a soft velvety feel, color is lovely. The print is large which is great especially if you are looking or buying for an older individual. Scriptures that are ordinarlily just printed as references in the usual small Jesus Calling book are completely written out. Very nice gift for anyone. Very nicely done!

About the Author
James Earl Massey is Dean Emeritus and Distinguished Professor-at-Large at the Anderson University School of Theology. He is also Pastor Emeritus and founding pastor of the Metropolitan Church of God in Detroit. The author of many articles and contributions to composite works, his several books include The Responsible Pulpit, Designing the Sermon, The Burdensome Joy of Preaching, and Sundays in the Tuskegee Chapel. Dr. Massey has preached and lectured at more than 100 colleges, universities, and seminaries in the United States and on four continents.

This text does an excellent job of breaking down the sermon design process. The text does not exclude the prayerful time of preparation nor the working of the Holy Spirit in the preparation of the sermon, but it does give a basic pattern for each type of sermon that is useful and helpful in giving the preparer additional thoughts concerning the sermon.

A book for all ages

I was introduced to this book in a class provided by the company I work for. The class was entitled "Thinking Outside the Box". This class has been attended by executives and managers at large corporations the world over. I'm sure no one in the class expected the last activity to be reading "Hope for the Flowers" aloud. Although this is a "children's" book, it can be appreciated at many levels. I'm sure children will find it very entertaining and moving. However, the specific message relevant to adults is that "following the crowd" in the corporate world can be an empty pursuit, and that we all need to recognize the possibility of reaching for higher goals. The story is engaging, with two charming caterpillars as the main characters, and the beautiful illustrations of them and their exploits are very imaginative. We should all aspire to be butterflies!

'Prof. Hoyos (Sydney) and the other contributors look at Roman expansionism from across about six centuries (c. 500 BC-c. AD 120),. in the process often addressing unusual issues, such as what is meant when we moderns use terms like “imperialism” to label events in antiquity, implicitly suggesting the importance of trying to see events from the contemporary perspective, rather than our own. The essays are grouped into three categories, the first examines Roman expansionism under the Republic, the second under the Empire, and the third the Romanization of the provinces during the early Empire and the “provincialization” of the Empire. This last part is valuable for it looks at critiques of Roman expansionism in antiquity, the limits of power even for so powerful an entity as the Roman Empire, and some comment about “aspirants” to empire. A valuable book for students of Roman history which may also prove interesting to the armchair historian.'

The Love and Logic Institute has hit a home run when publishing Stand in My Shoes: Kids Learning About Empathy. As a former third grade teacher, who worked with our school's character education program, this book is absolutely what all children need to read or have read to them. Empathy or rather the lack of it is a major problem in our society today. If this concept can be understood by our children from early on, it could have a major impact on families and schools. THANK YOU, Bob Sornson for your insight into writing this book for our children. This is a beautiful book, from the story to the illustrations. I highly recommend it for all families and schools.

Just received this book and I love it! When we look at society today, we see there is a deterioration of common decency and caring. Stand in My Shoes is a great tool to help kids see how their actions affect others. Another great book from Love and Logic Press.

This book was an excellent tool to use in the Pre-K through the 2nd grade to teach Emphathy. I also used examples from the book in the 3rd through 5th grade classes.

Arguing with Everything

This book starts with the standards of rhetoric laid down by Aristotle over two milennia ago. It explains the kinds, purposes, and conventions of classical argument in a vernacular English that contemporary teachers will be able to expound upon, and students will be able to comprehend. In essence, it brings Aristotle up to date without losing the unity that makes him worth studying to this day.

Unfortunately, only a small number of the chapters contain any examples of how this works in actual usage. To be really useful, this book needs readings. There is a larger edition with actual examples of rhetoric in use, but I naively thought my students would be happier with a slimmer, less expensive volume. Shame on me. I found myself running around all hell to breakfast, trying to find articles and essays that would exemplify the rules and notions of rhetoric for my students, hoping what I found (often on the fly) would actually be useful.

I like the layout and arrangement of this book. As far as it's useful, it's also informative and enlightening. But the more expanded version ought to be more useful to freshman composition students. Next semester, I will have my students buy the more expensive "with readings" edition, which will make my life easier, and theirs too, since they won't have to keep track of all my hasty photocopies.

A Solid Resource for Persuasive Writing

This book is designed to be an undergraduate-level textbook in persuasive writing. I read the book to see if I wanted to use it as a textbook for one of my classes. I think it's a very good textbook.

Part One introduces the types of arguments and various forums, as well as introducing the importance of context in persuasive writing -- it really matters who you are speaking to.

Part two covers the specific kinds of arguments in depth - arguments from the heart (humor and emotion), and those based on character, values, and facts.

Part Three is the meatiest portion of the book, addressing the structure of arguments, such as Toulmin analysis, arguments of definition, evaluation, cause, proposals, and humor.

Part Four deals with the style used in perfecting one's argument in written language, visual presentation, and spoken performances.

Part Five is shorter and discusses issues related to evidence, fallacious arguments (such as ad hominem attacks or slippery slope arguments), and intellectual property issues.

I like the clear writing style of the book and the informative explanation. The best part of the book, however, is the excerpts and examples. They are modern, relevant, engaging, and the students will enjoy reading and analyzing them. The chapter on Fallacies of Argument was also very strong, as well as the issues related to evidence.

Some things I did not like were the review questions at the end, some of which seemed ambiguous and overly time-consuming. Also, though the title is catchy, I do not accept that EVERYTHING is an argument -- the "Buckle-up" sign on the highway is just a sign.

That being said, I think EAA can be used as an effective textbook if certain sections are used instead of the entire book. Also, more in-depth analysis of Toulmin arguments might be examined in other sources, as it is treated somewhat lightly here. Overall, however, it can be a strong resource to help teach persuasive writing.

An encyclopedia hiding inside a textbook

This college textbook is in its fourth edition - doubling in size from 300 to 600 pages. The extensive index makes it useful as an auxiliary resource or even a stand alone.
The work is an encyclopedia on the subject of rhetoric. It is the first work on the subject that I have seen that includes `signifying' - a humorous style of African-American argument. In addition it includes the bones of a research handbook and the basics of Strunk & White. Unfortunately, it fails the Strunk & White goal of brevity. Making up for this in a great way is the section on citing almost every kind of resource in the MLA style. Even today there are MLA handbooks that omit instructions on how to cite articles that skip pages, how to quote from indirect pages or many other media other than print. The format is intensely visual which speaks well to the image rich environment in which we live. Visuals are key to instructing but shorten the life span of the work. In ten years, will a photo of Lil' Kim create the same learning opportunity as it does today? The book has a companion website which provides check lists for writing and research that are also covered in the book. The website checklists are much easier to use. Typically colleges do not include textbooks in their collections, but I would argue that this is one to break the rules for because of its high usefulness as a stand alone resource.

Likable characters having cheesy gratuitous sex

Let's be honest. The purpose of this book is to depict gratuitous, cheesy sex, and it did that in plenty. That said, this story hit me at the right time, the last several books I've read being horrible. I was almost giddy that there weren't any angsty immature teenagers in it that might turn into fairies or mermen or God knows what. Digging deeper, I liked Lily and Dylan. The author made me pull for them. I had to know what happened and wanted them to fall in love. I was glad they did and was glad also that he made positive decisions in his life.

But ... this is NOT the kind of book for anyone looking for something deep and meaningful. Yes, I liked these characters, and I actually liked that I was not being moralized to one side or the other of a political issue. BUT... it isn't a book that takes you into the past, making you feel like your reliving history, or makes you cry because you're so connected to the tragedy of their lives. I didn't learn anything from it (which was totally fine). I enjoyed it because it did for me what the last few whiny romances didn't. It held my attention depicting the lives of normal everyday people.

Details: This story contains graphic sex scenes and is written in a British point of view, using British terminology (which didn't bother me one bit). I didn't buy Dylan's mom talking to him about sex because my own life experience is way different from that. I kept asking, "Do moms do this?" This story needs editing. There are numerous small errors in spelling and word usage. Overall, I give it a 3.5, but because I read it all the way through, I'm rounding up to 4. Not recommended for young people are anyone sensitive about sex scenes.

A beautiful color-illustrated storybook for children age 3 and up

"Little Fairy's Christmas" is a beautiful color-illustrated storybook for children age 3 and up about a fairy named Faith is lost in a snowstorm in the woods, before Christmastime. Because her wings are frozen, she must walk barefoot on the frozen snowy ground to find shelter and aid. Faith meets a series of woodland creatures who offer her assistance in the form of a rose hip (for food) from a robin, warm socks and shoes from an owl, and finally Faith meets a shivering tiny elf boy who also is lost looking for Father Christmas. Together they press on, sharing their resources with each other and another woodland creature (a raccoon), until they find glowing in the dark by lantern light, Father Christmas! He kindly takes Faith and the elf boy on his donkey to the elf family's warm house, trudging under the moonlight until dawn. Father Christmas gives each child a perfect present, then leaves to deliver his other gifts. Afterwards, what a party Raith and the elf family had! What was her perfect present from Father Christmas? A soft blue hot water bottle to keep her nice and warm! The magical tinted illustrations show moonlight on snowy forest scenes with wild creatures and fantasy characters side by side, beautifully matched and paired. "Little Fairy's Christmas, " translated from German into English, is one of a series of children's books by the same author, including "In the Land of Fairies," "In the Land of Elves," "In the Land of Merfolk," "The Elves' Big Adventure," "What's Hiding in There?" and "Merlina and the Magic Spell."

Spreads the message of charity, kindness, and being thankful

I couldn't wait to open this book and read it this evening! And I was so very pleased by the artwork and the simple storyline that taught so much to my 3.5 year-old. It is such a magical tale, and captures the spirit of childhood and Christmas. Buy this book. I am going to slowly but surely start collecting all of her books. And add The Apple Cake by Nienke van Hichtum to your collection as well!
