Professor Colin Poole is internationally known in the field of thin-layer chromatography and is an editor of the Journal of Chromatography and former editor of the Journal of Planar Chromatography - Modern TLC. A good mix of walking tours

Wow! I spent time looking at other travel guides on Istanbul, but I gotta say LP got it right with this. A good mix of walking tours, where to eat, drink and party, when to go where and how--see fold out map with transportation map.

It's only 255 pages. There are only eight pages on lodging, which is how a tour book should be. I find lodging information to be useless, unless you're spontaneous.

The layout is easy to follow and efficient. The book breaks down by the popular districts, their layouts and gives you the best of those areas. Completely worth it.

A nice early look at Chinese Martial Arts

This is a reprint of a volume privately printed in 1961 by Professor T. Y. Wong and K.T. (James Yimm) Lee. Since I generally prefer the older (1960's and 70's) martial arts manuals, I was very pleased with this entry. A second volume was mentioned but never appeared.

This book touches briefly on the History of Kung Fu and then offers training advice, demonstrates some basic techniques and presents the first 2 Sil Lum forms. The authors then show some self-defense moves and combat applications as well as weapons demonstrations. Co-author James Yimm Lee also demonstrates Iron Hand/Breaking techniques. One of the things I like best about this volume is its emphasis on martial arts for health and using common sense in your training. Your health should be your first consideration and your training should be tailored to enhance rather than endanger your health. Along with your health, the authors endorse the qualities of humility and goodwill as the true spirit of martial arts, which often seems lost in these days of martial arts as competition.

As for the photos, I've seen scans of the original edition and the photos in this reprint edition don't seem as bright or as sharp as in the original. So, in some cases, it's hard to see the technique being demonstrated. Also, 2 of the pages are upside down. But, none of this bothers me in the least. I enjoyed reading this book and I will definitely be going back to it, now and again.

So, if you enjoy old-time martial manuals, I recommend this reprint, especially considering the rarity and cost of the original edition.

About the Author
Thomas Berger (1924–2014) was the bestselling author of novels, short stories, and plays, including the Old West classic Little Big Man (1964) and the Pulitzer Prize–nominated novel The Feud (1983). Berger was born in Cincinnati and served with a medical unit in World War II, an experience that provided the inspiration for his first novel, Crazy in Berlin (1958). Berger found widespread success with his third novel, Little Big Man, and maintained a steady output of critically acclaimed work since then. Mr. Berger's short fiction is a delight.

Mr. Berger's short fiction being collected for the first time (the 1984 Lord John Press limited edition of _Granted Wishes_ was not a collection) should be cause for celebration. Instead, this e-book has appeared without so much as a simper of appreciation. No surprise, I suppose, as Mr. Berger's work has never, outside of _Little Big Man_, attracted much attention or sold very well. Having read all 23 of Mr. Berger's novels, and been richly entertained by each of them, I've never understood the public's indifference to his writing. His stories, whether novel length, or as is the case here, in short form, are always amusing.

Mr. Berger is a master of language, and the stories chosen for this collection are uniformly excellent. Then there is the bonus material. What a pleasure it is to have some photographs other than those which have appeared on dust jackets over the last 55 years. Seeing Mr. Berger in the prime of life, clearly enjoying himself, was alone worth the price of the e-book.

A treat!

Having something new to read from Thomas Berger is always a treat, and this collection of short stories does not disappoint. The theme of abnormal occurrences is ripe for Thomas' uncanny ability to present characters who are either absurd themselves or faced with absurd situations. Even when writing about what appears to be a comically ridiculous situation, his characters display human actions and emotions that always ring true.

"Planet of the Losers," one of my two favorite stories in this collection, describes the interaction between a man and an alien. The exchange between the two, coupled with the backstory of the main character's own issues, is deeply engaging. Little elements like having the main character teach the very human looking alien that legs (which he has) can bend are truly funny in this author's talented hands.

"Granted Wishes" is classic Thomas Berger and calls to mind his great novels "Changing the Past" and "Being Invisible"; two of my all time favorite books. The story is dark though comic and ends with a true sucker punch that will undoubtedly surprise.

So why only four stars? While I thoroughly enjoyed the great majority of the stories in this collection, there is a group of stories under the heading "Tales of the Animal Crime Squad" that I simply did not enjoy and actually wound up skimming just so I could move on to a better selection.

This collection of short fiction from the genius (and ingenious)Thomas Berger does not disappoint. He never does. As a matter of fact, I'm still laughing at the outrageous comedy (as subtle as it is at times) and I'm still reeling from the powerful punches of psychological insight Berger delivers on nearly every page. Berger's use of language never fails to amaze me -- but don't mind me, I'd probably be mesmerized by reading his description of the ingredients in a jar of mayo, if he ever chose to write that. Do yourself a big favor you won't soon forget and read Abnormal Occurrences. You'll be writing a laudatory review soon after finishing the last page.

Your "Prescription" for an introduction to Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic Nutrition

So many people are confused about what to eat, what not to eat, and why or why not.

As a cardiologist (with a master's degree in physiology of exercise), I have had to tip-toe through the mine-field of nutrition publications to help myself, before I could help my patients. I started to gain weight while doing triatholons and following a Mediterranean Diet. Then I decided to follow the same diet I recommended to heart attack victims, I followed and failed a rigorous low fat diet. I was worse, gained weight!

I realized then that my patients were not lying to me when they continued to get worse: more weight, higher BP, worse cholesterol and triglycerides DESPITE my recommendations. They told me they followed my dietary and exercise instructions and continued to gain weight, despite a dietary regimen of only breathing air and drinking water.

I was desperate. I was the Cardiologist who was becoming obese with metabolic syndrome. How could I be a reliable, credible teacher for my patients when I couldn't cure my own "disease"?

Yes, I crossed the forbidden line for cardiologists. I "went Low Carb".

I learned about the science, metabolism, and applied biochemistry of low carbohydrate nutrition from Eric Westman MD and his colleagues. I took a course involving hours of tutorials and reviews of hundreds of scientific papers. I was convinced that there was scientific merit. I became my own guinea pig.

It worked on myself. Weight came down, BP came down, Triglycerides went down and HDL went up. All as predicted. Now I offer this to my patients with confidence, and following a 60 pound weight loss, I feel better about myself and about what my patients can achieve.

This manual is the essence. I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to follow this regimen become very familiar with the contents, and bring the manual to their health care provider. If there are any medical conditions present, as there usually are, then this regimen should be done under the supervision of a health care provider who is familiar with Low Carbohydrate Ketogenic nutrition. If your health care provider is willing to go along with you, but has not had experience with a ketogenic diet bring a copy of this manual along with a copy of the book "The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" as a gift. You, and your health care provider, will be happy that you did.

The Simple, Straightforward, Low Carb Plan that Works

This manual is a simple and effective low carb diet program; the same one used at the Duke Lifestyle Medicine Clinic. With it, I lost 55 pounds in 16 months and continue to maintain that loss without hunger, calorie counting or extensive exercise. Even better, shortly after starting the No Sugar, No Starch Diet; moderate arthritis, other joint pains, skin rashes, and blood sugar issues disappeared. At 62, I am active, energetic and enjoy vibrant good health.
It is not a long book with four diet phases or net carb formulas, but rather, the strict 20g total carb ketogenic diet that works for weight loss and diabetes control. It has simple rules and a list of allowed foods in a little booklet format to carry with you. If you have seen Dr. Westman's YouTube video of his Clinic Introduction Class, this is the short manual you should have to go with it.

A Very Workable Diet for Me

Both my husband and I are on this diet. Since we both love breads, it was very hard initially. However, my favorite part of Dr. Westman's diet plan is that I am NEVER hungry when I follow it. If I fall off the diet, I wake up hungry and craving carbs. However, when I do adhere strictly to this plan, it is fun to watch the inches melt off of my abdomen and thighs...plus I have energy to spare. My husband's health has improved immensely and he is off of all medications that he had been on for over twenty years.

Powerful and Compelling

Each time my husband Phil and I read one of Rick Joyner's works, we walk away challenged in our spiritual walk and refreshed and empowered by God's Spirit.
We have read both prior works ("The Final Quest" and "The Call"), and this sequel really brought home several truths which spoke to us personally as well as corporately.
The three main points that spoke to us were:
1) The children being raised up within the church to their rightful spiritual destiny.
2) Women being released in power and ministry.
3) The creative Hand of God shining through His people.
Although an avid reader, I would have to say that most books I read have some level of "fluffer fill." This book does not. It is a very strong message of repentance balanced with a message with encouragement and an impartation of God's strength. We highly recommend it.
