Important and Inspiring Ideas, Simply Presented

This was a powerful little book for me, with big ideas that, now that I've heard them, seem blindingly obvious. But sometimes the obvious needs to be pointed out. Like that fact that many so-called online courses are really just info products in fancy wrappers with inflated price tags and little-to-no teacher engagement.

Iny makes this point, and presents the exciting idea that solopreneurs with niche expertise now have the opportunity to make good livelihoods sharing that expertise through *personal engagement* with small numbers of students—who can provide the feedback needed to engage larger numbers of students.

Even though the book is mostly about ideas, there is some practical advice here: namely that it's best to test these waters in a low-risk, rapid-prototype kind of way that builds momentum. Iny suggests following a simple roadmap that involves quickly sketching out a pilot course and offering it for sale at a discount in order to get feedback and course correct along the way toward a more detailed course and larger business.

These are ideas that need to be heard, both by entrepreneurs, and potential students of online courses.

Creating Effective Online Educational Content

This short and to the point book provides a powerful concept for the creation of online educational programs. As a consumer of online education, I have to agree with many of Mr. Iny' s observations on the effectiveness of current online educational programs. His observations have made me realize that much of what I've bought is still sitting on a server somewhere. I am even forgetting what is it that I bought and where it is. How come that has come to happen?

if you are planning to create educational content, Mr. Iny's ideas on how to go about creating a pilot program are interesting and worthwhile considering. I am looking forward to applying his ideas to my next project.

I never Heard of this guy - I'm glad I discovered his book and company!

I just discovered Danny Iny and am glad I did. One of the newsletters I received linked to a video that discussed the ideas he presents in this book. My immediate impression was that 1- he knows what he's talking about 2- how cool that he is sharing this important insight and 3 - I should listen to what he has to say and learn whatever I can from him. We always wish we had a hint about what the next major trend in business will be. I think Danny has clearly defined it and I hope to act on his amazing tips and advice.

A Great Beginner's Book

For someone who knows wired networking, but is new to wireless, this book provides all of the fundamentals and basics you need to know to understand and implement a wireless network of any size. I bought it for possible use as a textbook, which I have now done, but I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to know the basics of wireless networking in explained in an easy-to-read, plain language way.

The book I needed, when I needed it!

This is the textbook that my class called for. Amazon had it, they shipped it to me immediately, I got it in no time. Case closed! :) Although the book itself is a relatively new publication, of course when you take the subject matter into account, the information is a bit dated. But, what can you expect for Information Technologies? New today is obsolete tomorrow. Basic principles of wireless networking is sound, but when it uses hardware examples, the technology had moved on. No longer is 802.11g the end-all, be-all of wireless networking. We have currently moved on to 802.11n at the time of this review. By next week, who knows what may be the new hot standard/trend!

A comprehensive, up-to-date look at genetic modification

I enjoyed this book because it is an up-to-date look at genetic modification. It explains all the major methods including zinc finger technology, TALENS and CRISPR-Cas9. However, a prior knowledge of biology is required to understand a lot of what author Jim Kozubek discusses. His discussions are comprehensive and he gets a lot of his materials through interviews. This is very interesting but some of the quotes are so long I forgot who he was interviewing. Sometimes he goes into too much detail and I would see the trees, not the forest. Kozubek also takes several detours that detract from the book. His discussion of Chomsky was incomprehensible and his discussion of Mary Shelley was interesting but largely irrelevant. His dives into philosophy were equally unappealing. However his discussions of the potential for gene editing and the ethical and legal implications were very good. Overall, despite the faults, I can recommend this book to anyone with a background in biology who wants to learn more about the subject.

Not The Best

We have enjoyed many other books in this series, but this is our least favorite. It mentions many ancient forms of money - facts that might be interesting to someone who is really into coin collecting. However, it fails to teach the basic values of our current coins. It's also less entertaining than most Cat-in-the-Hat books.

Valuable reference for serious Verilog developers

Verilog may appear to be "simple" for beginner because it is a loosely-typed language and its syntax is somewhat to that of C. In reality, Verilog is really a complex language and many intricate details and features are buried in the language standard (i.e., LRM, Language Reference Manual). Sometimes these details are counter-intuitive and cause unexpected behaviors (for example, the expressions "(a+b)>>1" and "(0+a+b)>>1" are likely to return different results). This book systematically lists and discusses these gotchas, provides guidelines to avoid these traps, and helps you to develop reliable and robust Verilog codes. It can save you many, many debugging hours down the road. Though somewhat expensive, this book is a valuable reference for serious Verilog developers. A simplified version of this book appears as a conference paper. You can search the web and take a look and decide whether it fits you need.

At least I'll recognize them

Just started writing SystemVerilog coming from a background of Verilog and C++ but the Verilog was a bit stale. There are a lot of things about SystemVerilog that seem counterintuitive from C++, such as automatic vs. static variables, that everything is essentially pointers, scoping rules, the way inheritance works. As I started reading the gotchas in this book, I realized I had already made several of them. I still make gotchas that I've read about but at least I recognize them.

A. K. Srivastava (M.Tech., G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar) is Manager (Design) in Aircraft Upgrade Research and Design Centre, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (Ministry of Defence), Nasik. Earlier, he was with RITES Ltd. (under the Ministry of Railways), and Dehradun Institute of Technology, Dehradun. Mr. Srivastava has also published ten technical research papers in reputed national and international journals.
P. C. Gope (Ph.D., National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur) is Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the College of Technology, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. With over two decades of teaching experience, he has published/presented 63 research papers in reputed national and international journals/conferences. A recipient of the Sir Rajendra Nath Mukherjee Memorial Award for his best research paper by the Institution of Engineers (India) in 2004, Dr. Gope has worked on five industry and CSIR-sponsored research and investigative projects.

Great for learning how to quickly build a mobile app

If you want to quickly and efficiently build mobile apps using react native then you’ll enjoy this book. The book walks you through the process of building a mobile application, while at the same time drawing comparisons between react native and common web technologies. The book presents a workflow and way of thinking about apps that really speeds up development.

I would not recommend this book until you learn the basics of javascript and preferably some of the new ES6 syntax like destructuring, etc. I don’t think you'll need any experience with react - the book does a good job of going over the basic react concepts. The book also provides enough detail on other common technologies (e.g. redux) to allow you to build a fully functional state of the art app.

This book is titled mastering react native, and it goes into enough detail that even professionals will find it useful, especially if they want to optimize their workflow / development process.

The book contains many hyperlinks out to detailed notes and references on the web, so I personally recommend the kindle version. The links are great if you want to go into more depth on the topics covered in the book.

This edition is also very recent and so the code examples and technologies used reflect the latest best practices. The javascript ecosystem is constantly changing so having a recently updated edition is useful.
