Poorly written

I was required to buy this book for one of my classes. As a straight-A student this has been, by far, the worst written educational books I have studied. There are blatant errors in the math examples. It may be translation errors on the publisher's behalf but I find the book doesn't flow easily or understandably. If any teacher is thinking of using this book for their class then be well prepared to re-explain everything to the class.

Needs polishing

I was required to get this book for a class. My biggest gripe with it is that there are lots of typos and it seems as though the book did not go through an editing staff to clean it up. Also, there are a lot "fluff" sentences in the text that are merely opinions and do not add to the reader's technical understanding of the material. I would not recommend purchasing this book if you just wanted it as a reference.

I purchased this book for a class. There are some typos. My biggest gripe is that it is no available electronically. I hate having to carry books around with me. I'd rather than just carry my computer and call it a day. I'm renting the book, but it arrived on time and does have some good information.

I will also include helpful practical business concepts I learned while I did an MBA at Columbia University and a Bachelor of Commerce degree at McGill University. Think of this book as a “greatest hits” accounting summary from my MBA, undergraduate business degree, work experience in consulting, equities, hedge funds, venture capital and starting my own companies. I have also included two bonus chapters on incredibly impoirtant business best practices and recent trends that many people often overlook in business.

As the title of this book suggests, this is a great introduction to banking. I have minimized “boring theoretical concepts” in this book in order to keep it as close to reality as possible. I hope you enjoy it!

Real-life Examples and Concepts Made Uniquely Clear and Personal

I can't get enough of Chris Haroun's perspective on being successful in business. I don't know of anyone else who better organizes their concepts and takes you directly to what you want to know.
It's so rare to find real-life examples and concepts made clear. I learned so much from the modeling and valuation sections, but am sure others will learn most from multiple sections suited more to them and their needs.
Chris uniquely makes business concepts so fun to learn that you want to actually go out and build a business just to put the ideas to work...even if you you hadn't even considered that business in the past!

Canaday looks at three key arenas of government control--immigration, the military, and welfare--and demonstrates how federal enforcement of sexual norms emerged with the rise of the modern bureaucratic state. She begins at the turn of the twentieth century when the state first stumbled upon evidence of sex and gender nonconformity, revealing how homosexuality was policed indirectly through the exclusion of sexually "degenerate" immigrants and other regulatory measures aimed at combating poverty, violence, and vice. Canaday argues that the state's gradual awareness of homosexuality intensified during the later New Deal and through the postwar period as policies were enacted that explicitly used homosexuality to define who could enter the country, serve in the military, and collect state benefits. Midcentury repression was not a sudden response to newly visible gay subcultures, Canaday demonstrates, but the culmination of a much longer and slower process of state-building during which the state came to know and to care about homosexuality across many decades.

Impressive, detailed study of 20th Century federal laws and policies justifying discrimination against gays and lesbians

Though I've never been much of an activist, I consider myself fairly well informed about the challenges faced by gay and lesbian individuals in dealing with federal laws and bureaucracies that have long chosen to ignore us, if not directly put obstacles in our path to equal rights under the law. I believed most of the latter policies were enacted since World War II, and had no idea - until I read this book - that such blatant discrimination was a part of federal policies since the beginning of the 20th Century, at least as regards homosexual males (Lesbians were not a priority, it seems, until around World War II.)

Ms Canaday, an assistant professor of history at Princeton, provides an exceptionally detailed and complete study of federal policies dealing with homosexuality, focusing on three areas: immigration, the military and social benefit programs. The information is provided in a clearly cohesive and logical order, despite the fact that the laws and policies she discusses were neither. The book contains copious footnotes, not just cites but detailed explanations of items mentioned in the main text, making the book accessible to the casual reader as well as for scholarly research. It is shocking to read about some of the longstanding policies of screening immigrants for "homosexual tendencies," and very interesting to read how early attitudes toward gays and lesbians in the military have evolved in the latter half of the century, eventually giving way to the faulted "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy we live with today. The inclusion of social programs in the analysis is important, as the entitlement to such programs was frequently used to justify the exclusion of homosexuals from the military or immigration.

An impressive, important work, valuable to anyone who wants a better understanding about where our fight for equal rights has been, in order to better plot a course from here. Five scholarly stars out of five.

An Important Book

Margot Canaday's Straight State is an eye-opening and occasionally entertaining account of the ways in which the national government helped to construct modern understandings of homosexuality and heterosexuality throughout the twentieth century. Canaday begins with harrowing tales of medical inspection predicated on bogus scientific theories linking homosexuality, physical deformity and dependence on state aid. She then goes on to detail the ways in which the military culture during and between two World Wars first challenged dominant conceptions of "gender inversion" and then consolidated alternative theories of sexuality predicated on desire. Finally, in the most engaging sections of her work, she shows how the post-war military complex and immigration law helped to shape public conceptions of lesbianism and the connections between sexuality and citizenship respectively. At times Canaday's style of writing and analysis can be a little on the "dry" side, but she approaches an important and previously understudied aspect of sexual and legal history with great skill and erudition.

About the Author

Damian Nance is Distinguished Professor of Geological Sciences at Ohio University. Damian has twice received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award, has been twice nominated for the University's Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award, and has toured as a distinguished lecturer for the Atlantic Provinces Intercollegiate Council for the Sciences. He has also worked for the Department of Energy, Argonne National Laboratories, Exxon Production Research Company, and Cominco America. In addition to being the author of over 150 papers, Dr. Nance is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, former Editor of GSA Today, upcoming Editor of Lithosphere, and Associate Editor of Gondwana Research and Geoscience Frontiers.

Brendan Murphy is Professor of Earth Sciences at St. Francis Xavier University. Brendan is an engaged teacher who has supervised more than 50 undergraduate theses and still manages to maintain an active research program that has allowed him to publish over 165 papers. He has been honored for his service to the discipline with the Geologic Society of America's Distinguished Service Award and with the Geologic Association of Canada's J. Willis Ambrose Medal. Few geoscientists can match Dr. Murphy's record of excellence in professional endeavor, dedication to education, and record of service to the profession.

Dr. Nance and Dr. Murphy have collaborated together for 28 years, publishing their first joint paper in 1987. Since then, they have coauthored over 100 papers and two books.

Shadow Applique by Hetty van Boven

Hetty van Boven's book, Shadow Appliqu� - a fresh take on a traditional technique does indeed take a fresh approach to a traditional technique. Hetty's easy to understand instructions takes the quilter through all the necessary steps to complete a variety of floral projects. From a personal perspective, I can't wait to start on the hibiscus and the nasturtium projects.
If you struggle with turning under seams and/or needle turning your appliqu� work, then this is the book for you.
One aspect I particularly like is Hetty's Hints which are scattered throughout the book. These certainly help explain some of the finer points of shadow appliqu� and take away some of the mystery of what, on the face of it, looks like a complicated process.
The illustrations are colourful and clear and add to the reader's delight. The 'how to ' graphics with hands 'preparing appliqu� pieces' are particularly useful for 'show me how' learners like me. I especially liked reading Hetty's 'floral' notes under many of the illustrations.
Hetty gives the quilter some very useful tips for machine techniques. I loved her comment, when giving some machine quilting tips, about remembering to breath. How true.
For me, the main effort involved will be in finding a copier which can accommodate the 500% requirement to enlarge the pattern for a 16" block. If I can master than bit of technology, then the shadow appliqu� part of it should be a breeze.
There are two projects at the end of the book. One, a pillow, shows you how to make one of your finished blocks into a pillow cover (Hetty chose the Passionflower block). All the details are there for a professional, satisfying result. The Norfolk Island wall hanging offers a different project and a new challenge to the quilter. The finishing touches for mitred binding and hanging sleeve are useful for whatever quilt you might make, and the final result is sure to please.
A great book, from a well-respected, international quilter who is willing to share many of her secrets with the reader. A highly recommended 'must-have' book for all quilters from novice to experienced.

Larry Collins has been a captain of the Los Angeles County Fire Department's central USAR Company since 1990. He has been involved in rescue operations worldwide, including the Pentagon collapse during the September 11, 2001 attacks, and the Alfred P. Murrah Building bombing in Oklahoma City, as well as numerous natural disasters such as the Northridge (CA) earthquake. Collins has been awarded multiple medals of valor for distinguished service.

Every year fire fighters and other rescuers are killed attempting to pull victims from rivers, streams, lakes, ponds, flood channels, rock quarries, tunnels, the ocean, and other bodies of water. The majority of water rescue operations are successful, but there are significant numbers of close calls. The inherent dangers associated with water rescue demand attention to strategy, tactics, training, standard operating guidelines, and other factors related to operational safety. Rescuer safety must be of paramount concern in all cases, because injured, lost, or dead rescuers can help no one.

The history of the fire service is replete with stories of ill-prepared, improperly equipped would be rescuers killed trying to help. Many of these cases have involved fast-moving water or large ocean waves and first responders who entered the water without the appropriate equipment, who weren't trained for the conditions they faced, or who were simply overwhelmed by the moving water and ended up in the same predicament as the original victim(s).

We've all heard that the force of moving water is deceiving; that it can overwhelm even the strongest swimmers and rescuer under the right (or wrong) conditions. This author, a lifelong swimmer assigned to an engine company, once found himself fighting for his own life after jumping into the raging sea during an on-duty rescue in a 1982 storm to rescue a fisherman who was washed off a rocky reef at the base of a 250 foot cliff in 12 to 15 foot waves with nothing but rock and reef along the coast.

The author, who like most firefighters at the time, had no formal training in surf and ocean rescue, was able to make his way to the victim and begin swimming the man back into the surf line. But the situation quickly turned into a life and death struggle to keep the victim and rescuer afloat as they began to be dashed against the rocks, pulled beneath the surface in the venture created by a canyon of submerged rocks, and washed back and forth 25 yards at a time by the storm swells.

After several minutes of struggle, the rescue was ultimately successful. However, more than twenty years later, this author is still left with these strong impressions from the experience: One understands the true worth of air when he is repeatedly forced beneath the surface to the point where "Just one more breath of air" becomes the most important thing in the world, and where he is forced to make a decision whether to hang on to the victim or abandon him to get a breath of air before blacking out. One also understands the true value of a rapid intervention system to provide emergency assistance when things start to go wrong and the rescuer gets into trouble. Fortunately, through youthful determination and luck, this author was able to hang onto the man, and everyone escaped alive, albeit with various levels of hypothermia, cuts and scrapes, and a renewed respect for the power of water.

Judging from the book's title (and its price), you would expect to find a tight, well-written, authoritative work on technical rescue operations. Instead, you get newspaper clippings about Southern California disasters that you could get free over the Internet, some murky photographs that look like like rejects from an amateur's scrapbook, and WAY too many of the author's own "war stories". Here's what you DON'T get: a single detailed procedure, a single technical diagram, or anything that even remotely resembles a standard authoritative strategy for handling ANY type of disaster. I don't believe that the author wrote the book with any intent to defraud, but this volume has got to be the most audacious rip-off in the history of Search-and-Rescue education. Save your money, and do your staff a favor: buy ANYTHING besides this book.
