Women Don't Ask: Negotiation and the Gender Divide, by Linda Babcock, Sara Laschever

When Linda Babcock asked why so many male graduate students were teaching their own courses and most female students were assigned as assistants, her dean said: "More men ask. The women just don't ask." It turns out that whether they want higher salaries or more help at home, women often find it hard to ask. Sometimes they don't know that change is possible--they don't know that they can ask. Sometimes they fear that asking may damage a relationship. And sometimes they don't ask because they've learned that society can react badly to women asserting their own needs and desires.

By looking at the barriers holding women back and the social forces constraining them, Women Don't Ask shows women how to reframe their interactions and more accurately evaluate their opportunities. It teaches them how to ask for what they want in ways that feel comfortable and possible, taking into account the impact of asking on their relationships. And it teaches all of us how to recognize the ways in which our institutions, child-rearing practices, and unspoken assumptions perpetuate inequalities--inequalities that are not only fundamentally unfair but also inefficient and economically unsound. With women's progress toward full economic and social equality stalled, women's lives becoming increasingly complex, and the structures of businesses changing, the ability to negotiate is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

Drawing on research in psychology, sociology, economics, and organizational behavior as well as dozens of interviews with men and women from all walks of life, Women Don't Ask is the first book to identify the dramatic difference between men and women in their propensity to negotiate for what they want. It tells women how to ask, and why they should.

Powerful!!
By D. Raymond
I read this book in almost one sitting. It has compelling factual data and riveting anecdotes. But, unlike Backlash, by Susan Faludi, which was almost totally negative, the authors also look at women's strengths in negotiation, and give some ideas for how to put their ideas into action.

It's not a how-to-negotiate book; I've spent the last 23 years practicing corporate law, negotiating sophisticated legal transactions and running an in-house department. This book goes beyond "how to" into "why". Essential reading for any woman!

Familiar, But Well-Supported
By Ruth Edlund
There isn't anything surprising in here to any woman who has been around the business world for a while. However, the book's real value is that it provides empirical evidence to support Everywoman's anecdotal observations.

What I found most useful about this book is evidence cited that women's "tend and befriend," cooperative approach to negotiation results in greater gains in the long run, in part because of women's ability to reframe. It also confirmed my impression that women are more successful in business when they soften their mode of delivery (although not their message).

The authors further reframe the scope of "negotiation" to include women's personal, including homemaking, lives, to remind us all that equality should not end at the thresholds to our homes.

Ultimately, every negotiator has to find his or her own personal style. This book made me feel just that much better about including lipstick and high heels in my arsenal.

Highly recommended
By Kathy Elliott, co-author "The Old Girls' Network"
This book is incredibly well-researched and thoughtfully laid out. It builds its case beautifully with interesting examples, then backs it up with empirical research. And credit to the authors' writing styles, for they do not point fingers or whine about the way things are. And they never fall into a dry style of writing. The book flows nicely, and is easy to read.
Most importantly, they shine a light on issues women have in asking for what they deserve and by laying out their case in such a well-articulated fashion, they help provide answers that we can all act upon and move forward with.
The issues that the book explores impact women across all facets of their life -- from negotiating child care responsibilites to getting the recognition and compensation they deserve on the job. As a co-author of the business book "The Old Girls' Network", I see these issues in evidence in how women buiness owners also negotiate -- for contracts, for customers, in how they price their products and reticence about charging appropriately. So, I would say this book has broad appeal to stay at home moms, women in corporate life and for the large contingent of female entrepreneurs. It is a must-have addition to all of our reading lists, and one that should bring positive results.

From Publishers Weekly
To many Native Americans, the 13 cycles of the moon represent the changing seasons and the passage of time. Each moon has its own special name that, while varying among the tribal nations, is consistent with the legend that the 13 scales on Old Turtle's back hold the key to these moons. The authors present 13 poems that take readers through the year, from the "Moon of Popping Trees"--when the "cottonwoods crack with frost"--to the "Big Moon" of the Abenakis. The book's effective design consists of verses in vertical columns at the left of each spread, with the remainder occupied by Locker's ( Family Farm ; Catskill Eagle ) typically lush artwork. His oil paintings are eye-catching in their depth of color reflecting dramatic seasonal changes. Trees, skies and woodland creatures are rendered in vivid hues that combine to produce an enthralling vision. This unusual and intelligent book is an exemplary introduction to Native American culture with its emphasis on the importance of nature. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-- The book opens with an Abenaki storyteller explaining to his grandson that just as there are always 13 scales on ``Old Turtle's back,'' there are 13 moons in a year, each of which has a name and a story. The poetic tales and corresponding paintings that follow represent myths or legends of different Native American tribes. Although the language of these poems is not particularly memorable or childlike, it does evoke images and passes on some of the traditions of the native people and their closeness to the natural world. The cadence is that of an adult explaining things to a child. Both text and illustrations have a distancing effect on readers. Locker's large, dark paintings stand parallel to or in tandem with the poems but are not integral to them. They create a mood and capture portions of the text, encouraging viewers to look ``at'' rather than ``into'' these images. There is a sense of vastness in these paintings, and sometimes a harshness, but little of the lushness or the warmth of the land. Although the cover illustration of the turtle is inviting and the large format attractive, these are poems that will probably not entice most youngsters on their own. They can be appreciated, however, when presented by an adult and will be a welcome addition to units on Native American cultures. --Kay E. Vandergrift, School of Communication, Information and Library Studies, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

From Kirkus Reviews
From a velvety moonlit wetland scene in ``Big Moon'' to the glory of a deciduous forest in the ``Moon of Falling Leaves,'' Locker once again proves himself a gifted landscape artist. In illustrating this Native American lunar calendar, he makes forays beyond the Hudson River valley to the lands of the Lakota and Northern Cheyenne, Cherokee and Huron, Abenaki, Cree, and more, catching the seasons in light, clouds, trees, and wildlife. As in his other books, human and animal figures are rather awkward intrusions, with some exceptions--notably a huge, four-square moose in ``Frog Moon.'' Folklorist Bruchac and poet London work together on brief, dignified retellings of Native American legends for the accompanying text, properly pointing out in an afterword that tribes in different areas see different seasonal patterns and hold different beliefs. Traditional View of Seasonal meanings
By steven h. abbott
This book is an excellent work of Native American children's literature. Joseph Bruchac is a well-known Abenaki story-teller who profiles in this book the thirteen moons of the year, and profiles for each moon what is important about that season to different Native Nations. The artwork is a beautiful compliment to the story. If you are looking for a solid and sensitive look at inter-tribal stories for children, this is a great place to start!

Delightful
By Kathryn P. Harper
I was fortunate to hear the author speak in the early 90s in my hometown of Syracuse, NY. He is an engaging storyteller. It was then that I discovered his book. The artwork in this edition is rich and appealing. The vignettes of each moon, combined with the illustrations, make an appealing canvas for young and/or exploring minds.

This may sound daunting to some, but making your own products is one of the most empowering ways to take your beauty and health into your own hands. Just because the beauty products in stores contain tons of ingredients with extremely long and complicated names doesn’t make all those chemicals necessary—don’t let them overwhelm you. Making beauty products is a lot easier than you’d think.

Some of those ingredients can even be harmful. Pthalates, sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfate, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycol and the infamous parabens are just a few common beauty product ingredients that have been reported to cause irritation, cancer, organ abnormalities, hormone disruption and sterility.

Now that that’s out of the way, for the majority of the book I want to focus on the enjoyable aspects of natural beauty rather than the disease-causing aspects of the unnatural variety. Hand-crafting your own all-natural beauty products is extremely satisfying and fun. If you love DIY, then I’m certain that you’ll enjoy creating some handmade beauty products. Additionally, making homemade beauty products is also a cost-effective and super thoughtful way of making gifts for friends and loved ones.

From the stance of a beauty professional, creating your own personalized homemade beauty products is a fantastic way to find solutions to problematic skin without blasting your face, hair and body with chemicals that may be detrimental down the line. I speak from experience.

After moving to New York from Texas, my skin had never looked worse. Stress, change of climate, change of water, pollution and who knows what else were clearly taking their toll, and my skin exacted its revenge with tons of huge, angry, inflamed zits. Of course, my first course of action was to evaluate my diet, up my water intake and be sure to be active and sleep well, but then I took a look at what I was putting on my skin. After some research I discovered my ordinary store-bought cleanser was mostly petroleum-based, preservative-filled garbage. I began researching more natural brands, and as I did that, I realized a lot of their active and most effective ingredients were those found in my kitchen. As a makeup artist and beauty addict, I’d always been interested in skin care, but once I embarked upon my natural skincare sleuthing, my interest turned to an obsession.

For my imbalanced, acned condition, a friend suggested I use raw apple cider vinegar as a toner after cleansing. I began seeing drastic improvement in my complexion, and started trusting all-natural ingredients to care for my skin. I also began using tea tree oil to zap away zits, and a lemon and honey concoction to decongest my pores (you can find the recipe for that in the Detoxifying section of the Skin chapter!). Day by day my skin was improving and eventually returned to a state of homeostasis.

I began to wonder what natural ingredients could do for my dry hair and body. Natural oils, fruits, yogurt and a number of other items found in my very own kitchen did a fantastic job of nourishing and hydrating my hair and skin. At this point I was hooked on educating myself about, and randomly slathering on, all types of edible ingredients.

Annie's Homemade Beauty is a treasure trove of ideas for the natural beauty addict. I have for years made many of my own beauty products like salts, salves, and dry shampoo. This book is a great go to reference for all the new things I haven't tried. My kids are experimenting with some of the recipes now! There are quite a few that require products for you may have to order ingredients, but many of the recipes can come straight from your kitchen. If you are an at home esthetician or you want to be one; this book is PERFECT! I'm stoked to try the body oil recipe and have already tried the Mattifying Face Powder- it rocks! And, oh my goodness, who would've thunk the Strawberry Teeth Whitener was a thing? It totally works- and super easy. My teenagers are brushing their teeth with strawberries! I can't say enough good things about this book. I love it.

CAN ARCHAEOLOGY’S GREATEST MYSTERIES
BE TRACED BACK TO THE LOST
CIVILIZATION OF ATLANTIS?

The Great Pyramid. Stonehenge. Machu Picchu. For centuries, these and other sacred sites have attracted pilgrims, scholars, and adventurers drawn by the possibility that their true spiritual and technological secrets remain hidden. Who could have built these elaborate monuments? How did they do it? And what were their incomprehensible efforts and sacrifices designed to accomplish?

Now comes a revolutionary theory that connects these mysteries to reveal a hidden global pattern--the ancient work of an advanced civilization whose warnings of planetary cataclysm now reverberate across one hundred millennia. Here is startling evidence of an intelligent society dating back as much as 100,000 years--one that sailed the oceans of the world, building monuments to preserve and communicate its remarkable wisdom.

The Atlantis Blueprint is the authors’ term for a complex network of connections between these sacred sites that trace back to Atlantis: a sophisticated maritime society that charted the globe from its home base in Antarctica...until it was obliterated by devastating global changes it anticipated but could not escape. Opening up a Pandora’s box of ancient mysteries, lost worlds, and millennial riddles, The Atlantis Blueprint is a story as controversial, fascinating, dangerous--and inspiring--as any ever told.

From Publishers Weekly
In this pseudoscientific account, Flem-Ath, a Canadian librarian, and Wilson (Alien Dawn: An Investigation into the Contact Experience; etc.), bestselling author and New Age-y jack-of-all-trades, propose a single, geo-historical theory that links the Egyptian, Chinese and South American pyramids and other sacred sites. According to this argument, these civilizations received templates from Atlantis that contained crucial geodesic, geological and geometric information. Furthermore, Atlantean mariners, based in Antarctica, sailed the globe over 100,000 years ago and established more than 60 sacred sites around the world, such as Byblos and Jericho, to preserve the sophisticated wisdom of their culture. They erected these sites, say the authors, before geological disasters wiped out their civilization. Flem-Ath and Wilson take us on a hectic roller-coaster ride through pseudoscientific history, complete with the requisite numerology and mythology. The authors stand proudly on the shoulders of their forefathers, Charles Hapgood featured prominently among them. Before his death in 1982, Hapgood had amassed "irrefutable" proof of civilizations far more ancient than accepted archeology allows for. Flem-Ath and Wilson seem to leave no cultural, geological or paleontological stone unturned in their quest for detailed evidence, touching on everything from the origins of Freemasonry and the Ark of the Covenant, to ancient Japanese pottery in America and angels in the Book of Enoch. Frequently, they claim the interest or support of various famous people, many of whom suffered untimely deaths. Albert Einstein and John F. Kennedy, for instance, died before fully embracing earlier theories about Atlantis. For followers of mystical science, fantasy readers and conspiracy theorists, Flem-Ath and Wilson's enthusiasm and conviction will be a welcoming island in a sea of skepticism.

From Booklist
Veteran chronicler of history's mysteries Wilson and his cowriter Flem-Ath have come up with a new theory on Atlantis, or at least an expanded version of an old one. An intelligent society (but probably not from outer space), commonly known as Atlanteans, lived in snow-free Antarctica and left a connection of sacred sites that spans the globe. Whether the authors' theory could possibly be true is hard to divine because their evidence is so convoluted, so filled with measurements and math, geometry and geography, that it would take an Atlantean to work it all out. It doesn't help that the authors feel compelled to throw into their discourse everything but the kitchen sink: the Knights Templars, pyramids, even the Shroud of Turin make an appearance. Still, these sorts of books always generate hype and never fail to attract a solid audience. Pair it with James and Thorpe's Ancient Mysteries (1999), which debunks just this kind of treatment. Review
In November 1982, Professor Charles Hapgood wrote to a young correspondent, Rand Flem-Ath, adding an amazing postscript to his life's work on ancient civilizations:

"There is evidence that the last displacement of the crust moved both American continents southward about 30 degrees, and absolutely devastated life and civilization on them....

"Furthermore, in recent exciting discoveries I believe I have convincing evidence of a whole cycle of civilization in America and Antarctica, suggesting advanced levels of science that may go back 100,000 years...."

The idea was revolutionary. And it came from a man who had collaborated with Albert Einstein on the theory of earth crust displacement. Hapgood had discovered maps of sub-glacial Antarctica and he was on a secret quest for Atlantis. He was now telling Rand that civilization was 100,000 years old.

Rand Flem-Ath replied immediately, asking for some hint of Hapgood's reasons for this amazing assertion. For weeks there was no reply, then his letter was returned, stamped "deceased."

Hapgood's last letter led Flem-Ath to his own quest for the origin of science and civilization, of which this book tells the story....

Fascinating hypothesis, compelling reading!
By RaabH
Put briefly, the premise of this book is that an advanced civilization existed in distant prehistory, sometime around 10,000 - 12,000 B.C. Its cultural center was located on what is now the continent of Antarctica and was wiped out due to a global cataclysm: a shift in the earth's pole, from a former North Pole in the Hudson Bay in Canada to the current North Pole location in the Arctic. This pole shift brought tremendous upheaval and resulted in sheets of ice covering Antarctica. These ice sheets prevent today's researchers and explorers from uncovering the strongest evidence of its existence.
The inhabitants of this civilization were technically advanced, particularly in the area of geology and possibly in other areas as well, including acoustics. In terms of geology they were able to figure out that even earlier pole shifts had occurred and, the authors surmise, were able to predict that there was another one coming that was going to wipe out most of what they had come to build. They had two goals: to create as permanent a memorial as possible to their existence and to pass along their knowledge to subsequent cultures. This memorial would encode a message to a future, advanced civilization that it, too, should be aware of the existence of pole shifts.
Wilson and Flem-Ath postulate that this ancient civilization accomplished its first goal -- memorializing their civilization -- by creating a huge network of "markers" at meaningful locations around the globe. Giza was chosen as the prime meridian, partly due to its being the geological "center of mass" of the continental array of the time. The global survey resulted in markers being placed all of the globe, at regular intervals of degrees of latitude and with orientations that pointed to the pre-shift pole location and/or to the post-shift location. Through this means they knew that a future advanced civilization -- one that also had knowledge of the earth's dimensions and poles -- would be able to interpret their message. The Great Pyramid of Giza, as the monument located at the center of world mass and on the then-prime meridian, provided the most carefully coded clues based on its dimensions and design.
As the people of this culture came into contact with the other, less advanced cultures of the time, they made a powerful impression. They were often considered to be gods or angels. As a result, their influence is expressed in a miriad of ways: as Mayan gods, angels in the Book of Enoch, Egyptian gods, etc. In addition, the sites they marked in their survey came to be considered sacred sites. This resulted in sacred temples, shrines, and buildings being erected.
"The Atlantis Blueprint" presents a remarkable overview of how sacred sites all over the world -- from Stonehenge to Easter Island -- fit into the scheme created by the lost civilization. It even shows how it has become possible to actually predict where an ancient site *should* be located, based on the blueprint, and how certain sites came to be discovered based on it. (This latter point was to me the most compelling part of the authors' presentation, since the truest test of any theory is its ability to not only explain past phenomena, but to *predict* future phenomena. Wilson and Flem-Ath's concept of the site markers provides a straightforward way to test their ideas -- if their techniques can be applied to areas of the globe where historical sacred sites have not yet been uncovered, and this results in the discovery of sites at those locations, then it adds tremendous weight to their ideas. And, indeed, this is just what happens.)
The book is entertaining and engrossing. It also provides an excellent starting point for exploring various other theories about the possible existence of this civilization, including the books by Charles Hapgood, Andrew Collins, Graham Hancock, and Robert Bauval. In some instances, Flem-Ath and Wilson provide elegant summaries of these authors' theories. (Based on this book I myself have now decided to read books by Hancock and Bauval as well as more about the Book of Enoch, the Templars, and the Mayans.)
Some points I would like to make in addition:
The book does not propose that Antarctica itself took a "voyage", or that any islands sank into the sea, but rather that the longitude of Antarctica shifted and thereby radically altered its climate.
In addition, Wilson and Flem-Ath do *not* claim that the advanced civilization actually built all of the sacred monument that exist at these important latitude locations. Instead they believe that the local inhabitants were responsible for the monuments, viewing the locations as sacred due to the fact that the revered "gods" had placed markers on them.
Also, you will notice that I have avoided using the term "Atlantis" to refer to this ancient civilization, since I think many readers may find the Atlantis association too "New Age" for comfort. Perhaps these people did refer to their home city as Atlantis, or maybe it was Plato who is more responsible for the name, but whatever the case, for me it is the possible existence of this civilization that is most important.
Finally, some readers might find it more helpful to read the Appendices *first*, then the main portion of the book. The Appendices provide some nice summaries of Wilson and Flem-Ath's theories that I probably would have liked having under my belt before I began the book.
Highly recommended to those with open minds and inquisitive natures.

A Challenge to Conventional Thought
By Jonathan Dolhenty, Ph.D.
I think there are at least three points thatreaders need to keep in mind as they approach a reading of "The Atlantis Blueprint." The first point is the distinction between ordinary or "mere" speculation, a leisurely activity we all engage in during our daily lives and which is seldom critically examined, and serious or "scientific" speculation, a formal activity involving critical examination related to an important topic and based on objective evidence. The second point is the distinction to be made between a singular "piece" of evidence, which can always be seriously challenged, and a related "web" of evidence, which is more difficult to challenge and will always raise the level of probability or certitude. The third point to keep in mind is that many hypotheses and theories proposed in the past have been rejected and considered untrue or impossible, only to be accepted later as conventional doctrine. In other words, science marches on, as do historical research, philosophical analysis, and other serious disciplines.
In "The Atlantis Blueprint," Colin Wilson and Rand Flem-Ath confront and attempt to solve one of the most fascinating mysteries of world history: was there an ancient civilization, an advanced technological culture, a precursor to the early societies about which we have written knowledge, and which was subsequently destroyed by some catastrophic earthly event? Furthermore, if such a civilization did exist, where was it located then and where are its vestiges now? For many, this ancient civilization was Atlantis, first described over two millennia ago by the philosopher Plato in two of his dialogues. Considered merely a legend by most contemporary scientists and historians, the existence of Atlantis or some similar advanced precursor civilization has rarely been the subject of serious scholarship. Wilson and Flem-Ath may have changed that by offering a critical work which presents a serious challenge to conventional thinking and raises numerous issues which deserve a response from the scientific and historical communities.
This book is certainly not a matter of "mere" speculation; it is a critical examination of the objective facts currently available and is, therefore, serious scientific speculation. Also, the book presents a "web" of related evidence, not merely singular and disjoined "pieces" of evidence which can easily be cast aside and ignored. What is presented is a mosaic of evidence, both emperic and rational, blended and unified to support their main thesis that an advanced technological culture may have existed in ancient times and that it may have been located on the continent of Antarctica. A wild theory based on an old legend presented by an ancient Greek philosopher? Consider, for a moment, the city of Troy. Conventional wisdom had maintained for centuries that Troy, discussed in Homer's great work the "Iliad," was a figment of Greek legend and few scholars took its possible existence as a serious matter. And, then, along comes a German archaelogist named Schliemann, who in 1870 defies conventional wisdom and excavates the city of Troy.
For many years, I have been bothered by the fact that Western history generally begins with the Sumerians. Here we are presented with a highly-evolved ancient civilization, yet we seem to have no idea what led to its specific development, that is, there seems to be no "evolving" culture prior to Sumer which explains its own being. It's almost as if Sumer just "popped" into existence with its culture intact and completed. This is very difficult to accept. The idea of a precursor civilization such as that proposed by Wilson and Flem-Ath, whether or not one wishes to call it Atlantis, seems to be required.
The questions with which "The Atlantis Blueprint" wrestles are many and intriguing. Did a maritime society such as Atlantis really exist and was able to sail around the globe influencing and, possibly, dominating other societies? Is Atlantis the civilization that provided the technological know-how for building the pyramids in Egypt, Machu Picchu in the Americas, Stonehedge in England, the statues of Easter Island, and other important monuments all over the world? And how does one explain the similarities which exist among many of the languages in various regions of the world, regions which conventional wisdom has maintained never had any contact with one another? And what about the ancient maps which have been discovered, maps which show features the ancients are not supposed to have known about? Furthermore, how does one explain the so-called "sacred sites" which we know exist around the world and which appear to have so much in common? These questions and many others are tackled by the authors.
It is true at this time that the existence of an ancient sophisticated precursor civilization, whether or not it is called Atlantis, has not been proven conclusively. It is true that if such a society did exist in the past, we do not conclusively know its location then or now. But an important step forward in this fascinating investigation of our cultural ancestry has been taken by Colin Wilson and Rand Flem-Ath. "The Atlantis Blueprint" needs to be taken as a serious work of critically-examined speculation, a presentation of a well-researched web of evidence, and an exciting challenge to the conventional wisdom of our time. Whether one considers the existence of Atlantis and its location on Antarctica an initial hypothesis or a persuasive theory, an ancient legend or a literary myth, a mere possibility or a strong probability, we cannot dismiss the importance of the investigation. The authors have performed an invaluable service and, in my opinion, this book is worthy of a place in everyone's personal library.

"An exhaustively detailed argument that the legendary lost city was located just north of what is today Antarctica and that its highly evolved citizens traveled the world building and mapping sacred sites from Egypt to Mexico. Drawing extensively on history, science, and old maps, as well as offering their own speculative theories about the disappearance of Atlantis, the authors offer not only a new location for the city but also assert that civilization is much older than currently thought. Plato mentioned Atlantis in his writings, they argue, and the notion of a civilization that suffered catastrophic destruction is found in many early writings, from the Bible to Sumerian tablets. Atlantis, thought to exist either in the western Mediterranean or in the Atlantic, was assumed to be a victim of either a comet or the events surrounding the Biblical flood. Flem-Ath theorizes here that the North Pole was once situated in the Hudson Bay, that the Antarctic climate was temperate, and that Atlantis flourished there until catastrophic movements occurred in the Earth's crust around 9600 B.C. Observing the movements of the stars and planets, the Atlanteans had predicted and prepared for the upheaval and were able to flee, carrying their advanced knowledge to places as far flung as Egypt, Central America, and the Indus valley. To preserve their lore, they built monuments that became the sites of such sacred places as Machu Picchu, the pyramids, and Stonehenge. Mathematical calculations, detours into the founding of the Freemasons and the Knight Templar, who hid their secrets in a small French village where Jesus may have fled with Mary Magdalene after surviving the crucifixion, all make for a dizzying but stimulating theoretical extravaganza. The authors are most persuasive when demonstrating that intelligent society dates back further than is usually accepted."

Forgetting Ourselves on Purpose: Vocation and the Ethics of Ambition, by Brian J. Mahan

In the wise and often witty Forgetting Ourselves on Purpose, Brian Mahan considers the question of how it is possible to create a meaningful spiritual life while living in a culture that measures us by what we have rather than who we are. Drawing on nearly two decades of teaching experience. Brian Mahan shares stories of personal struggle and triumph that demonstrate how those who seek meaning and purpose have recalimed their authentic selves by resolving the inevitable tension between personal ambition and spiritual vibrancy.

From Publishers Weekly
Do we all have "shadow governments of compassion and idealism"? In this odd, sometimes disjointed but always engaging meditation on the relationship between vocation and ambition, Mahan answers yes. Referencing Thomas Merton, Frederick Buechner, William James, Walker Percy and Leo Tolstoy, Mahan muses rather than argues, and ends each chapter with assignments gleaned from the college courses he has taught on this topic. For example, at the end of one chapter, he invites readers to hold a national press conference at which they attempt to rationalize an episode in their lives when they engaged in repeated self-deception leading to serious moral compromise. Each chapter and assignment leads readers, in one way or another, to examine the tension between the lives they would live governed by compassion, in complete harmony with God's calling, entered into via "epiphanies of recruitment" and the socially scripted, ambition-driven lives they do live. Pleasantly surprising is Mahan's light touch: he never resorts to heavy-handed homilies about how bereft conventional lives are, but rather invites readers to observe themselves living such lives, and to do so nonjudgmentally, with equal parts good humor, discomfort, acceptance and motivation to change. While encouraging readers to attempt mystical and imaginative exercises, Mahan ultimately avoids prescription. On the contrary, he ends by suggesting that ambition and vocation are not mutually exclusive, and that God delights in any and all attempts that flawed, inevitably ambitious people make to live according to their ideals.

From Booklist
In a short book demanding a slow reading, Christian educator Brian Mahan challenges the American cult of success with its inevitable apotheosis of the triumphant self. Convening an improbable conclave of spiritual advisors--Christian devotionalists, psychological theorists, and modern novelists--Mahan invites readers to probe the origins and consequences of their personal ambitions. Again and again, our cravings for wealth and prominence betray our vulnerability to self-deception and alienation, as we rationalize choices that suppress our authentic impulses of benevolence and idealism. To help recover our suppressed aspirations, Mahan guides us through the tasks of "formative remembering" (What am I living for?) and "spiritual misdirection" (What is distracting me from my true aims?). Honest engagement with these tasks draws us into the paradox of deliberate self-forgetfulness and toward the joyous discovery of what Mahan calls vocation: the proper dedication of our unique talents to meeting the needs of others. A priceless book for readers whose march through success manuals has left them with only emptiness and cynicism. Bryce Christensen

More Than Five Stars!
By Jim Street
This is a fantastic book, not so much because it tells you how to resolve the tension between ambition and vocation, but because it accompanies you on the journey of working through these preoccupations yourself. You will not find any "5 Easy Steps to Success" here nor will find any "How to Find God's Will For Your Life." Rather you will find a philosopher who walks with us the razor's edge between our desire to get ahead in this world and our desire to live a meaningful life. Mahan is not sanctimonious in his approach to this all-too-human struggle. He does not condemn or issue platitudes. Rather, he invites the reader into a introspective, somewhat guided, tour of his or her deepest convictions regarding both "mere success" and "true success."
In a sense, Mahan's book is an extended meditation on Thomas Merton's call, "If you want to identify me, ask me not where I live, or what I like to eat, or how I comb my hair, but ask me what I think I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the the thing I want to live for."
However, this is not an "easy read." In parts, it gets a bit dense. (I found myself reading certain passages several times to get at Mahan's point.) However, I do think it would be a great book for audiences as diverse as college students who are trying to figure out what to do with themselves, mid-career executives who are struggling to move form "success to significance," as well as anyone striving to find some order in their lives as they pursue both their ambitions as well as their vocations. Heck, this is a book for all "baby boomers" who at one time felt they had been called to "change the world" in the name of "love, peace and justice" only to find themselves becoming precisely what they, at one time, detested.
The book includes a number of wonderful "practices" reminiscent of Walker Percy's "Lost in the Cosmos."
I encourage anyone who asks how to live a meaningful life in a world that forevers seeks to drain us of life to read this book.
I would give it more stars but Amazon only allows five.

Selfless ambition
By FrKurt Messick
This is no ordinary book. As author Brian Mahan says his in preface, `reading this book is not a spectator sport.' In many ways, this is just like life - we have to get into the mix (or, to take another example from Mahan's introduction, join in the dance) for it to become meaningful, worthwhile, and all the other positive words one would normally insert here. This is a book that invites active engagement. Mahan does not argue so much as persuade, and even then, it is more of a presentation than a direction.

Mahan developed this book out of a course he taught at the University of Colorado, and later Emory's seminary and high school advancement programme - the course has always been popular, Mahan states, but it isn't always clear why. Mahan attaches some of the popularity to the presence of the word `ambition' in the course title (which is also part of the subtitle of this book) - the focus of the world is often on success, and rising high school and college students are often ambitious in various ways. However, it is not the kind of political/corporate ambition, or the kinds of ambitions that make soap operas interesting to watch sometimes, that Mahan develops here (although these types are not disconnected from what Mahan writes). Mahan is looking more directly at the ambition toward self and self-fulfillment.

Mahan develops ideas of paradox throughout the text. How can we honestly pursue self-abandonment if the very pursuit shows an attachment to self? When can success end up being a failure, and how is failure often a success? Mahan uses personal stories and experiences as well as the tales of those around him to illustrate the various points - he also draws on history, sometimes the lesser known bits. For example, to highlight the failure of success, Mahan draws upon the curious dinner between film star Rudolph Valentino and curmudgeonly writer H.L. Mencken - Mencken was ostensibly consulted on how to deal with the press, but figured out later that what Valentino really sought was validation and direction in how to turn his failure of a successful career into something with true meaning.

This is perhaps the heart of Mahan's text as a whole - the search for meaning in life. What is point of success if it has no meaning? Meaning requires more than simple (or even elaborate) gratifications of the ego, the flesh, the persona. It requires an honest appraisal of who we are as individuals, how we relate and fit in to our communities (large and small), and how our lives are responding to the vocations, the `higher callings' if you will, that have been given to us.

Mahan is a Roman Catholic layperson, so many of his stories draw from this tradition. However, Mahan's text is drawn broadly enough to incorporate people from all faith traditions, or those with no particular tradition or affiliation. Mahan's story about sneaking into heaven is a good example - as a child, Mahan had experiences with a particular convent in Boston, and he felt in many ways he found a way to commune with God there that was if not directly at odds with the officially line, at least in some ways apart from how one, as a good Catholic, would get into heaven. Mahan's image of God being one who does not just stand among the alabaster and marble statues, but also works in the kitchen (where `you could have cooked maybe a hundred turkeys at once and the mashed potatoes to go with them').and welcomes even the not-quite-so-good children in the back door.

Each of the chapters comes with suggested practices (remember, Mahan is a teacher!). These are spiritual practices that can be deceptively easy. They are truly worth engaging in long-term and introspective ways. They are practices that may come forward again and again, and do not constitute a set of `been-there, done-that, moving-on' kinds of activities to simply get through. The reader who takes the time to engage herself or himself fully in these practices will find a transformation taking place.

One of the key differences between ambition in the more worldly sense and the type of vocation and ambition that Mahan discusses is the connection to others. Mahan quotes James Fowler's summary of vocation, including the observation that those in vocation are `augmented by others' talents' rather than finding them a threat or competition (often the case in politics and corporate models of ambition). We also see our limitations as important as, if not more important than, our gifts and strengths.

Mahan writes about the differences between occupation and preoccupation, saying that vocational awareness has more to do with the latter. Fitting into a life of our true vocation requires awareness of who we really are, as opposed to what it is we are doing. We also need to be flexible and allow for change (something often more easily done in our preoccupations than our formal occupations).

The spirituality of Merton is very present; the spiritual sense that infuses many religions is on every page. This is a great book for the seeker, those longing for direction, and those who want more out of life in the most meaningful of ways.

Best Book on Vocation
By A Customer
I absolutely adore this book. I've grown tired of books on vocation that have a "pie in the sky" approach to living a spiritual life, as if everyday working people have the financial resources to devote themselves to a life of good deeds. Brian Mahan has a great way of bringing two worlds together---the need to pay the bills and the need to make a positive contribution to the world. Turns out you can do both!
I also like his "spiritual retreat" approach. He incorporates spiritual exercises at the end of each chapter which really help to focus attention on living a life of integrity. Finally, this is a practical and inspiring book---but a book with a humorous edge---that unites compassion and ambition in a fresh, new way.
Read this book!
