BEST BOOK EVER!

The kids always say this book gives too much information but it's worth the extra read! It explains everything well and really, most chapters are only 2 pages long! The only downfall is that the book is heavy but what college book isn't? I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who's taking 6th form or pre-college chemistry!

I like the book a lot, for my own personal review. It's written for the UK, so some of the terms aren't our standard terminology, but it's well written, and each lesson is concise. I like it for helping to prepare my high school lectures.

"Wild Times" Is A Winner!

Brian Garfield has a gift for placing himself in whatever period of the Old West that he wishes and speaking out about that time period through his characters, which are expertly crafted. The main character, Hugh Cardiff, is supposed to be based on the life of one of Buffalo Bill's main Wild West Show competitors, an expert marksman named Doc Carver. While some of Hugh's exploits seem a bit larger than life (that's the point of the book, isn't it?) most of them are entirely believable, given the rugged real people who lived during the Old West. It's an excellent book to read on a rainy Saturday afternoon with nothing else to do; I guarantee that you won't put it down once you start reading, and Garfield can really spin a yarn. If you like the late, great Louis L'Amour's style of writing, you will really enjoy this book. You'll also get to meet unforgettable characters such as Caleb Rice, Ibran the Apache, Al Seiber, and Libby Tyree.

"Wild Times" was made into a miniseries in about 1980 with Sam Elliott in the title role. If you are a fan of his work, please try to find the film (only on VHS, as far as I know), and watch it. The richness of Garfield's literary characters springs effortlessly on the screen. Bruce Boxleitner is excellent as Vern Tyree, although Garfield's literary character in the book is much more venomous and even psychotic. The written characters of John Singleton Tyree and Harry Dreier leap from the pages of the book unto the screen via Leif Ericson and Cameron Mitchell (last roles for both?) who worked together on The High Chaparral Western TV series as John and Buck Cannon. Ben Johnson also has a nice role in the film as one of Hugh Cardiff's admirers and principal mentors, Doc Bogardus. However, the literary Bogardus created by Mr. Garfield is even more interesting than Mr. Johnson's portrayal, which is stellar all by itself.

Please forgive the digression about the film, but I thought it was necessary, because if you have both the book and the film, you can see just how lifelike Garfield's characters can be. As good as the film is, the book is definitely better. Buy it; it's a gem!

This book coveres the life and times of fictional Hugh Cardiff and man whose many experience mirror the facts and ledgends of the old west. I Loved when it first cam out and I regret never having seen the Mini-series, I hope is availible for rent someday.

Excellent!

This is a great book about the history of comics that had me laughing out loud on numerous occasions. It is surprisingly self-aware and easy-to-read. It is full of historical fact and appears rather dense upon first glance, but the narrative style and humor make it hard to put down. The history begins around 1900 and is mostly heavily focused upon what is traditionally considered the Golden and Silver Ages of American comics (approximately 1930s until early 1970s.) Understandably, its hard to write a history focused on the near present. However, I wish there was additional material covering the 80s and 90s. (Hopefully a future edition.) To be clear, this is not a book about superhero comics. Of course, its hard to talk about American comics without discussing superheroes, but the book just a great job of covering all of the other important genres including EC horror and the underground movement of the 70s.

My only real complaint, and its a minor one, is that the book has no pretenses to objectivity when it comes to some of the creator disputes involving Siegel and Shuster, McFarlane, etc. The authors even refer to Kirby as "our hero."

Excellent choice for people familiar and unfamiliar with comics

While no single text could possibly contain the entire history of all comics, this book does a great job balancing a good overview and providing enough interesting detail. The last few years have seen an explosion in books regarding the history of comics but this is the first comic book version on that subject. I have read most of those books and feel this one provides new insight into the matter and is also comprehensive. If you had to pick one book, I would make this the book of choice for the history of comics.

The book manages to convey a surprisingly large volume of information while retaining a sense of humor and being fun to read. The art often works to good effect as a counterpoint to the narration and dialogue. It starts at the beginnings and goes right up to the present looking at digital comics and piracy concerns. The history of comics is the history of the 20th Century in America, making this not only a good gift for comic book fans but also for fans of history, pop culture or just a good read.

Not quite what I expected, but pretty good

To start with, I was provided an electronic, pre-publication review copy by the publisher. Many of the graphics near the end of the book were missing this copy. For the purposes of this review, I will assume they are of similar quality to those in the rest of the book.

This book could have been called the Comic Book History of Comic Books, because it only covers comic books. It rarely mentions newspaper comics. I also expected some use of original subjects, but this book is entirely a newly-drawn graphic history of comic books. Characters and styles of old comics are used in places, but not original graphics.

A detailed history, this book covers the twists and turns of fickle taste. Superheros are in and out and in again. Gore is in and then out. Romance ebbs and wanes. Teen subjects peak and fall. All the while there is conflict and competition within the industry, and threats--and, at times, imposition--of censorship from without.

Despite its graphical nature there is a lot of text, and information, in this book. While an easy read, it is not a quick read. For those interested in comic books this is an excellent, medium length, history. Readers without an interest in comic books will soon drift away.

About the Author

James B. Worthen received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Texas Tech University. He held positions at Michigan Technological University and the University of Texas at Brownsville before joining the faculty at Southeastern Louisiana University where he is now Assistant Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The bulk of his research has been devoted to understanding the mnemonic influence of bizarreness and distinctiveness.

R. Reed Hunt received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of New Mexico. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Texas at San Antonio, he taught at Dartmouth College, Furman University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His research has focused on human memory. He currently is Associate Editor of Memory and of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition.

Very thorough and Quite Readable for those Interested in the Topic

I am very interested in memory in general and in mnemonics specifically, so I was happy to find a book like this. I found it very readable, with lots of info of course about mnemonics - more detail than you're likely to get from a typical pop-psychology book on mnemonics. These are researchers who know their stuff and who know the research. Excellent resource.

A facinating read

This book is both interesting and informative. The authors provide practical instruction on useful memory techniques and, quite uniquely, present an interesting discussion of the processes that underlie such techniques. What's more there are ample and often amusing examples that illustrate the techniques. A must read for anyone interested in memory.
