Oh Yeah! Do-it-yourself rocks

I just tuned my Karmann Ghia based on the learnings from this book -- and it is running with much more accelleration and smoothness! Never knew much about cars before, but I always heard how fun it is to own and maintain your own classic VW. It's true. I'm having a blast learning, caring for, and driving my VW. Every week I tackle something new and my car just gets better and better.
Muir's book is fun and easy to read. I also recommend using the Haynes repair book in combination with this book. The Haynes book has good technical details.

Great for soccer fans and sports lawyers.

Interesting and informative for anyone interested in the legal and business structures around American and world soccer (football). Easily scanned for those seeking the big picture plus plenty of details for those who want a deep dive.

My favorite stories relate to the old NASL and the realities of the situation back in the day. Makes the current picture seem healthy, if not miraculous, by comparison.

My only regret is that there's no chapter regarding FIFA's current situation, but I'm guessing that will be a whole other book.

I really think this book is a blast to read if you like soccer and studied law or are at least genuinely ...

Most of the book is very academic, except for the foreword (a part that is downright hilarious and a must-read). Academic or not, I really think this book is a blast to read if you like soccer and studied law or are at least genuinely curious about different areas of law. It covers a very wide variety of subject matters and touches on many different areas of the law. Building on that, this book not only taught me a few things I didn't know about the formation of the modern game from a legal perspective, but it also helped me refresh in areas of law I hadn't touched since having studied for the bar exam as well as learn a few new areas of law.

In addition, definitely take the author's suggestion and feel free to skip around if one chapter does not appeal to you as much as others.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Little bit dry, but interesting for soccer fans

This book goes through the various court cases, both in the USA and in Europe, that have significantly influenced the sport and business of soccer.

If you're a geeky soccer fan (as opposed to a more casual fan of the beautiful game) this book will likely interest you. If not, you'll probably think it's boring.

I liked it.

One of the best books on mythtelling ever

Kane's perspective of mythtelling as a human dialogue with nature seems an idea so obvious that at least some in long line of scholars who dealt with myth before him must have hit upon it. Not quite so. Though this connection between what we would now call environmental awareness and the stories a culture tells itself has been bandied about in earlier works, The Wisdom of The Mythtellers is unique in making this gentle, unassuming and deeply ecological angle its central point. Simple things often can have a flash of genius about them.

Kane's idea, perhaps his most important one and definitely most appealing to me, is that "myths which evolve in sympathy with nature are different from myths which compete with it" (22). His argument for that claim has a clearly modern, even postmodern feel to it. Kane is sensitive not only to the ecological consciousness as expressed in myths but also to the uniqueness of specific mythic traditions. Without imposing any uniformity on the myths he examines, Kane gives us their unique flavor. He also deals with the danger myth may pose to modern humans--what in the Conclusion he calls "the lure of ancient meaning". At the same time he asserts that mythtelling has gone on and will go on as long as humans will interact with their environment. In this sense I find his ideas about "the wisdom of the mythtellers" particularly relevant to our modern civilization, increasingly oriented (at least theoretically) toward practices of living with the earth on the earth's terms. In the course of this process, Kane says, we are discovering the respect for nature demonstrated by archaic humanity. If so, we may, perhaps, learn something from them. A humble and profound work. Highly recommended!

A unique, powerful and gentle book

Wisdom of the Mythtellers is one of the few books that changed the way I view the world and my place in it -- for the better.
This is an exploration of the myths and cultures of living hunter/gatherer societies. It is not a rehash of the mythology you learned in ninth grade English class.
Sean Kane supports his assertions with ample evidence from many cultures, living and ancient, and presents them with poetic grace and gentle humor.

Tom endures it all with his penchant for doodling and writing about everything that happens. About the Author
L. Pichon says that when she was little, she loved to draw, and her mom said she was very good at making a mess (this is still true today). She kept drawing, went to art school, became a designer and art director at Jive Records, and began to publish children’s books. After its publication in the U.K., The Brilliant World of Tom Gates won several prestigious awards, including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Waterstone’s Children’s Book Prize, and the Blue Peter Book Award. L. Pichon lives in Brighton, England, with her family.

"Read It and Go Ha! Ha! Ha!"

Here's a titanic trans-Atlantic heavyweight match: Jeff Kinney's Wimpy Kid and Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants versus Liz Pichon's Tom Gates and anyone in a David Walliams book. Classic. And the smart money is on the duo from the U.K. Walliams is the current king of kid lit in Britain with most of his books holding most of the top spots on everyone's lists. But the Tom Gates books, and there must be a half dozen by now, are holding their own nicely.

Tom Gates is a fifth grade boy whose innocent hi-jinks always seem to get him into trouble. Undaunted, he is a master of excuses, explanations, stories and embellishments. He is neither whiny nor wimpy nor particularly devious. Rather, he is just one big bundle of life, energy, optimism and gung-ho deadpan knuckleheadedness. Titles in the series describe his "Brilliant" world, his "Fantastic" world, his "Excellent" world and his "Amazing" world, and that pretty much sums up his cheerful and whole-hearted embrace of life.

The book is printed to appear like a hand written diary, with loads of drawings and doodles, which makes it easy to approach and read and easy to like. The supporting characters - parents, teachers, mates, classmates, and long suffering sister - all add their bits to the action and are sketched with great insight, if not always affection.

The book has a few over-arching plot points, (trying to score concert tickets and trying to have a band), some sub-plots, (crushing on a class mate Amy, who thinks he's an idiot), and a lot of one off set pieces, (class trip to the museum). This keeps the action moving at a fast pace and keeps us from getting bogged down in any complicated plotting. We flip through Tom's school year the same way he does, careening from emergency to emergency and just trying to stay afloat.

But bottom line - it's funny, it's honest in an exaggerated way, and it features a hero who, by gosh, you just like. Can't do much better than that.

Please note that I bought this book on spec because of its great buzz. I'm happy I did. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher or the marketing agent of this book.

From annoying his big sister Delia to playing in his band 'Dog Zombies', Tom's life is action packed everyday.

His hobbies are:1. Hiding his sister's glasses(I thought hiding them in the salad packet was very inspirational!)
2. Eating caramel wafers
3. being in a band

Then all of a sudden some awesome news - his favourite band - DUDE 3 - are coming to do a concert at his town!He's desperate for tickets but will he earn them in time? And will inviting Amy Porter whom he has a secret crush on make it any easier?

Yay! My 8 year old finally found another series that he is as obsessed about as Wimpy Kid! My son is not a big reader - he doesn't find many books interesting enough to hold his attention for long - but he LOVES these books. This series is relatable to most kids in upper elementary and middle school. I'm just very happy he's found something that he enjoys to read. If your child likes Wimpy Kid - he'll love this series! It's very funny and similar design style.

The real community dentistry in most of the world

All other books like european books about the subject, are produced on a view embarassed for central, uniform and national health plans. This book make present in literature, the reality of many kinds of dental services delivery, like the state and private market. This aproach is more close with the real situation for most countries, speciality in plural societys.
For this reasons, that book is a powerfull toll for all Dentists interessed in knowing "how is" the actual basis that are building a future of our profession.

Essential reading for the dental public health professional

Burt and Eklund have taken a good thing and made it better. The new edition of "Dentistry, Dental Practice, and the Community" maintains the attention to detail and liberal referencing that was found in the 4th edition, but it adds tables and charts that are easier to read and tighter organization of the chapters such that common topics flow together more readily. Congratulations on a job well done.
