A very good witness and historical work on some of the most fanatical troops in WWII. From the German point of view however, they were not fanatics, just patriots. A nice perspective from someone other than the "victors" that sometime get to tell history from their point of view.

Simply Majestic! It changed my life...

Arauz's details of his personal tribulations, in conjunction with education, serves as a platform to encourage Social Workers, family members, and survivors of mental illness to advocate on behalf of this population and commit to providing supports, whether emotional, physical, or mental, despite its challenges. The tone and style of the writing, the author's argument for mental health system modifications and improvements, and the role of the book in the Social Work field and families were all strengths of the book. Overall, the book is an excellent read and reinforced the importance of my role as an active therapeutic support of individuals with persistent mental illness of approximately four years. Arauz teaches his audience not to minimize unconventional forms of communication and utilize critical thinking skills when recognizing crisis and intervening during its occurrence. Buy it!

One of the most inspiring people I have ever met

Eric is one of the most interesting and inspiring people I have ever met. His new book tells the amazing story of his life and is guaranteed to entertain, while offering a new perspective from one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented groups in America, the individual suffering from addiction and other mental illnesses.

Riveting! An Absolute MUST Read!

When I met Eric, I was immediately struck by his high energy and contagious passion for life. I knew he had a mental illness, but considering how vibrant he is, I couldn't imagine that he had such a troubled past. It was very difficult to put his book down and I admire him even more not only for the successes he has achieved in recovery from mental illness and as an entrepreneur, educator, advocate and inspirational speaker; but also, and probably even more so, for his strength to make it through the hell he experienced and to move on with his life in a very positive manner. Imagine a man who endured child abuse and other challenges associated with having a dad with a serious, untreated mental illness. Imagine a man experiencing his first symptoms of mental illness after being discharged from the Navy and while facing the painful end of a marriage and loss of a beloved stepdaughter. Imagine a man who became physically weak from spending hours in restraints, is now physically strong and mentally stable, is a fulfilled husband and father, and continues to struggle with the fear of his symptoms being triggered and of his daughter developing the same illness. Better yet, don't imagine it. Don't even try. It will pale in comparison to the compelling book that tells Eric's incredible story. His story is a must read and will inspire anyone, whether or not mental illness or addiction affects a reader's life, and whether or not a reader is or plans to be working in the behavioral healthcare field.

About the Author
Ralph A. Rossum is Salvatori Professor of American Constitutionalism at Claremont McKenna College. He has written or co-written eight books, including his most recent, Understanding Clarence Thomas: The Jurisprudence of Constitutional Restoration (Univ. of Kansas Press, 2013). He has served in the U.S. Department of Justice as Deputy Director of its Bureau of Justice Statistics and as a board member of its National Institute of Corrections.

G. Alan Tarr is Distinguished Professor of Political Science and director of the Center for State Constitutional Studies, Rutgers University, Camden. He is author of twelve books, including Without Fear or Favor: Judicial Independence and Judicial Accountability in the American States (Stanford University Press) and Judicial Process and Judicial Policymaking, Sixth Edition (Cengage). He has served as a constitutional consultant in Brazil, Burma, Cyprus, Russia, and South Africa. a mother-daughter play about life, love lost, depression and suicide

Marsha Norman's play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1983. It's set in a small house on a lonely, country road. Jessie is middle aged, epileptic, divorced, jobless, mother to a thieving son and lives with Thelma, her mother. Thelma is the only other character in the play. The play is one long scene - there are no changes, acts or intermissions.

They have a believable relationship. Their family, their whole town is average. The know they are boring and accept it. They don't complain about it. Thelma is fine with her life. She has a son, a few friends and her crocheting to keep her busy. Jessie has nothing - she is empty and is tired of life. At the start of the play, she tells her mother that she is going to kill herself. Thelma does not take her seriously at first, but eventually does. The rest of the play is a volley of truth telling, stories and the occasional begging by Thelma.

It's sad, heartfelt and decent. It's neither brilliant nor terribly interesting. Without know the other nominees from 1983, I can't say it was the wrong choice for the Pulitzer, but I can write that it was a very very weak winner.

Convinced she has no control over her own life, Jessie Cates resolves to end it. But this is not an impulse decision. She has spent months carefully laying the groundwork so that when she is gone, her needy mother Thelma will be able to carry on. Now nothing is left but to make sure Mama is aware of what's going down so she can prepare herself for when it happens.

Since its first production in 1983, this play has ascended to the ranks of theatrical classics for its almost operatic language, its intimate one-on-one tension, and its shocking denouement. The most stunning surprise in this one-act is its lack of surprise. The crisis point is already past when the play begins; what we're left with isn't conflict so much as conflagration.

As tensions run high, Jessie and Thelma lock themselves into a downward spiral of emotional revelation and high-strung confrontation. Personal disclosures come out with a degree of quiet honesty that many current histrionic playwrights would shy from like a branding iron. And Jessie proves to be one of the most strong-willed characters in theatre for the last generation.

Though remarkably short, this play is extremely compact. Not one word is wasted. And despite the dense subtext, the refreshingly direct language makes a break from all the recent plays that need to be decoded to be understood. This DPS edition includes updates the author made for the 2004 Broadway revival, bringing some of the dated language into the 21st Century.

This play plows a field so unique that subsequent playwrights have fled from this level of stunning lucidity. There is precious little else quite like it in the current theatrical scene. Terse, candid, and powerful, "'Night, Mother" casts a shadow on every writer currently working.

Devastating

Night Mother by Marsha Norman, the 1983 Pulitzer winning drama is an emotionally draining play. It has only two characters, Jessie Cates, the daughter who lives with her mother, Thelma Cates. These are both simple country women, with Jessie being the quieter and less demonstrative and Thelma being more talkative.

Jessie is around 40, epileptic, divorced with a son who is turning into a criminal. She sees her life as lacking in the positive and feels that it will not change. She makes a final decision about what she will do about that and this play is about the night she means to implement her decision.

It is short play and takes little time to read, but prepare for the emotion it engenders.

I read this book in the spring and loved it! I moved from Washington state to Mississippi ...

I read this book in the spring and loved it! I moved from Washington state to Mississippi my sophomore year of high school (I am a junior in college now) and this book totally opened my eyes. I thought I was some kind of superfreak when I moved to Mississippi and I went through major culture shock but I didn't even realize it until reading this book! It explained so much of what I went through in moving from a cold climate culture to a hot climate culture. I read it in like two or three hours, so it's a quick read! I definitely recommend for anyone moving to a different culture, or even just visiting or going on a mission trip!

Amazing book

This book will really open your eyes to how similar and yet different we all are. The author does a wonderful job explaining the hot and cold climate personalities. It really helps my husband in the customer service industry to better understand his customers to help them. He serves people in New England, California area, in the southern states of the US, people in England, France and Germany, South America. It has helped us as a family when trying to help the refugees in our area to be able to understand them better to help them. This book is a great book all around. It can help you understand your in-laws, business associates and the people around you everyday. Let's face it our world is getting smaller and we're living amongst people of different cultures all the time.

Excellent handbook for training cross-cultural workers

This is an excellent introductery book for anyone who seeks to understand intercultural communication and living. Although it is short and simple, the book will provide a good orientation for short-term workers, especially anyone serving as an aid worker or religious servant. The examples from the author's life are insightful and helpful. I particularly appreciate the charts which contrast the various issues one must wrestle with in attempting to understand and communicate from hot to cold cultures, or vice versa.
