La Sangre de Espana (The Blood of Spain)

Adam Hochschild’s beautifully written, if somewhat biased book, tells the story of the Spanish Civil War though the eyes of several of its participants mostly on the Republican side. It is clear where his biases lie, but then again, it is hard to cuddle up to Franco and his henchman. It is not what he leaves in, but rather what he leaves out. Although he discusses the role of the Soviet NKVD in Spain he doesn’t give full treatment to its perfidious role. As I have written elsewhere many of the participants in the civil war were pawns in a larger geopolitical struggle.
That said there is no question about the heroism of the Republicans he portrays. His heroes are Robert and Marion Merriman, American communists who go to Spain to fight against the growing fascist menace. In the lingo of the day, they were premature anti-fascists. Merriman is the model for Hemingway’s hero Robert Jordan in “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Merriman would ultimately lead the Lincoln Brigade and die in a fire fight towards the end of the war. Unlike, “Hotel Florida” which deals with the comings and goings of the journalists covering the war, Hochschild focuses in on the war fighters and the daily tribulations they suffered from.
The villain of the piece is Texaco chief Torkild Rieber who turns his company into an oil depot for Franco. It was Texaco aviation fuel that powered the German bombers over Guernica. And it was Texaco personnel throughout Europe who alerted Franco of incoming supply ships to Republican Spain.
A failing of the book for all of the leading personalities he discusses, he leaves out Steve Nelson, an American Communist who was the political commissar of the Lincoln Brigade. To see the world through his eyes and the purges that were undertaken both in Spain and later in Moscow would have offered a much greater insight into the day-today role of the Russian security services in the war.
Hochschild ends his book by discussing a counterfactual where the Republicans win the war. Would European history be fundamentally different, Hochschild generally thinks not and he doesn’t believe that Spain would have become a Soviet satellite given its inability to occupy the country. However, Cuba proves that the Soviets could have a satellite without military occupation.
My own counterfactual is what would have happened if Franco won quickly in late 1936 or early 1937. Had that happened there probably would have been no story, Hitler would not have been able to test his weapons in combat, there might have been less fear of aerial bombardment in London and maybe a million Spanish lives would have been saved. Or alternatively it would have been another signpost that fascism was on the march and the Western democracies had better get out of the way.
All told Adam Hochschild has written a terrific book that takes you back to an era when politics meant something.

Spain in our Hearts is the poignant chronicle of Americans caught in the vortex of the horrific Spanish Civil War 1936-1939

Long ago General William T. Sherman, the scourge of Dixieland, said "War is Hell!" Your humble reviewer often thought of that as an accurate summation of warfare in any age or place. The Spanish Civil War 1936-39 was a holocaust of suffering and gruesome death. a holocaust of suffering and gruesome death in all its macabre forms on the battlefield and in the marketplace of small villages. Over 200,000 civilians died. Pablo Picasso's great painting "Guernica" depicts the horror of an attack by Condor Legion Planes on Basque peasants on an April afternoon in 1937.
The war was between the Nationalists forces led by Francisco Franco. He went on to rule Spain until his death in the 197s. The Nationalists were backed by Pius XII and the Vatican, monarchists and rich businessmen and huge landowners. Texaco Oil supplied them with weapons and sided with their cause despite US legislation which prohibited dealing arms to countries at war. Opposing them was the present government communistic in its leading. The Republicans were backed by Soviet Russia receiving military aid and troops for Russia. Leading authors such as Ernest Hemingway, his lover Martha Gellhorn, John Dos Passos, Louis Fischer, Virginia Cowles and many others reported the war to the American people back home. The New York Times received reports from correspondents who favored either the Nationalists and the Republicans. Fighting was terrible; prisoners were usually executed. Scenes such as priests shooting republicans was normal. Atrocities occurred on both sides. Franco was getting aid from his friend Adolf Hitler while Stalin supported the Republic of Spain. In the end the Republicans were soundly defeated and Spain suffered under the puritanical and cruel dictatorship of Franco for many years.
Adam Hochschild is an award winning historian. He has interviewed many people who had ancestors who fought in Spain. The book is filled with anecdotes about the variety of Americans who fought in the Lincoln Brigade. Most of these troops were Communists and one-third lived in the New York area. Many were Jewish. Volunteers did come, though, from over forty US states. More than 7,000 served with hundreds being killed.
These stories are fascinating. The book has good maps, bibliography and footnotes. It is written in novelistic style which will be easily comprehended by general readers. The Spanish Civil War was the testing ground for weapons that would later be unleased by Hitler and Stalin on suffering Europe during the dark days of World War II. Well researched and written this work by an outstanding historian is a worthy addition to your history bookshelf!

A super-human task brilliantly brought to fruition.

An amazing recording of the hows, whys and who's that made Spain a laboratory for weaponry and cruelty during its Civil War, 1935-1939. We learn how Franco usurped the embryonic republic and, despite clear advantages and victories, exercised not one whit of mercy or understanding for his enemies. International sympathy for the doomed Republic gave rise to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, comprised only of a few thousand pro-Communist sympathizers united with idealistic Americans and Brits who dared to cross borders between Spain and France, or between Andorra and Spain, to fight in rudimentary fashion with weaponry forwarded them by the Soviets --- some of it pre-revolutionary armament. Hochschild has done the best job to date making the intemperate Caudillo not sympathetic but minimally human;and he has a great deal of colorful help from the men and women of the International Brigade and the American newspapers that followed them. Hemingway, Dos Passos, the Roosevelts (both Eleanor and Franklin), Picasso, Martha Gellhorn stride through these pages - worried,despondent,realistic,doomed - and so do others previously not eulogized but so worthy of emulation and regard. The basic antagonism between Madrid and Barcelona is made clear; the futility of resistance is heart-breakingly presented. The horrors of being on the ground and basically defenseless while overhead German and Italian planes let loose death and destruction below is achingly recorded. Indiscriminate slaughters are horrifying - far more moving than those listed in "The Rape of Nanking."
The details of death on the ground are as accurate and moving as anything we've read, which includes the brilliant but largely anonymous "Fear."
Happily the book has maps throughout so the reader can see where both sides are operating,and against what odds. A wondrous experience, the best and most realistic introduction to war by proxy probably ever written. Highly recommended.
