A witty satire
By WillW
I had so much fun reading this and I didn't want it to end! The novel has a bit of fun at the expense of the followers of the Banting diet and Tim Noakes, and will have you guessing who killed the Professor right up until the very end. I especially enjoyed getting into the heads of the characters, each with their own self-serving agendas and issues, each trying to put themselves ahead in the game, at any cost. However with the humour injected into every chapter things never become too serious and you're sure to have a good laugh.

A great read that I would highly recommend!

As proudly South African as Banting Pap
By LDP
What a fantastic light-hearted spoof novel! I read it on a 2 hour plane trip and it was fantastic. The book pokes fun not only at the banting/Noakes diet fad and the reactions to it, but also touches on a myriad of other truly South African issues. It is a great spoof in the form of a classical whodunnit with a cast of characters that will make you giggle out loud.

Christian Daily readings for every day of the year
By alexionus
As true Christians, each of us needs a daily prayer and Scripture reading program. The Prologue from Ochrid in English is a great tool for individual participation in the prayer life of the Church. The Christian Orthodox manner of reading Scripture is both liturgical and patristic. 'Liturgical' means: New and Old Testament readings are used in worship throughout the year, and each day's selection points to the mystery of Christ. 'Patristic' means: the Church Fathers' guidance and interpretation of Scripture contains over two thousand years of spiritual warfare experience. The Church helps us understand Scripture: Acts 8:30, 31.

This is Volume 1 of a 2-volumes set. Description: "New, much cheaper entire edition in two volumes. Hardbound with full-color dust jackets. Volume 1: January to June, Volume 2: July to December. The text of this 1,450 page magnum opus of St. Nikolai has been translated from the original Serbian and edited by clergy and monastics of the Serbian Diocese of Western America. Bishop Ware says of this book, Until now there has existed no book on this scale in the English language, following the Orthodox Calendar, with concise yet detalied lives of the saints for every day of the year. There are about three pages for every day. Far more than a catalog of facts and dates, the saintly bishop's personal vision and inner faith are evident on each page. Like the Lord, he delights in vivid parables. Gifted as a preacher, theologian and pastor, the bishop suffered as a confessor for the faith at Dachau. 1448 pages."

Every Orthodox home should have this book
By Photini
As a newly baptized member of Orthodoxy, I was told by a priest that this was a great way to read about the saints and learn by their example what Orthodoxy is all about. After reading just a few pages I can honestly state this book is very helpful and should be required reading for any catechumen.

Prologue From Ochrid Review
By Rev. William E. O'Brien
The set that I purchased on Amazon is the newest edition of this set. I have an older edition of this set which I have used for years. I have always loved the Prologue and recommend it to anyone who wishes to learn more about the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Churches. Also, thanks for the fast delivery. Father William O'Brien

Angry White Men: American Masculinity at the End of an Era, by Michael Kimmel

"[W]e can't come off as a bunch of angry white men.”
Robert Bennett, chairman of the Ohio Republican Party

One of the enduring legacies of the 2012 Presidential campaign was the demise of the white American male voter as a dominant force in the political landscape. On election night, after Obama was announced the winner, a distressed Bill O’Reilly lamented that he didn’t live in “a traditional America anymore.” He was joined by others who bellowed their grief on the talk radio airwaves, the traditional redoubt of angry white men. Why were they so angry? Sociologist Michael Kimmel, one of the leading writers on men and masculinity in the world today, has spent hundreds of hours in the company of America’s angry white men – from white supremacists to men's rights activists to young students –in pursuit of an answer. Angry White Men presents a comprehensive diagnosis of their fears, anxieties, and rage.

Kimmel locates this increase in anger in the seismic economic, social and political shifts that have so transformed the American landscape. Downward mobility, increased racial and gender equality, and a tenacious clinging to an anachronistic ideology of masculinity has left many men feeling betrayed and bewildered. Raised to expect unparalleled social and economic privilege, white men are suffering today from what Kimmel calls "aggrieved entitlement": a sense that those benefits that white men believed were their due have been snatched away from them.

Angry White Men discusses, among others, the sons of small town America, scarred by underemployment and wage stagnation. When America’s white men feel they’ve lived their lives the ‘right’ way – worked hard and stayed out of trouble – and still do not get economic rewards, then they have to blame somebody else. Even more terrifying is the phenomenon of angry young boys. School shootings in the United States are not just the work of “misguided youth” or “troubled teens”—they’re all committed by boys. These alienated young men are transformed into mass murderers by a sense that using violence against others is their right.

The future of America is more inclusive and diverse. The choice for angry white men is not whether or not they can stem the tide of history: they cannot. Their choice is whether or not they will be dragged kicking and screaming into that inevitable future, or whether they will walk openly and honorably – far happier and healthier incidentally – alongside those they’ve spent so long trying to exclude.

Angry white men will be angry about this book 0: )
By Miss
"Defensiveness of the white male is so narcissistic that any criticism of masculinity and male entitlement is seen as attacking and destroying an entire biological sex". This is a quote from Michael Kimmels book, and I think it resonates a lot with many of the 1 star reviews of his book. Angry white men that read this book, feel like "masculinity" is being attacked, and so they say things like "the pussification of America!!!" and leave a poorly written 1 star critique.

It's a great book. It is well written, thoroughly researched, incredibly informative, and I came across it just in the nick of time. I was getting frustrated with the countless droves of men that seem to have made it their mission in life to spend their days on the internet, typing furiously at their keyboards about the "evils of feminism" and about how "oppressed" the male sex is now "because of the feminists!" . Men going to forums and spreading their misogyny around, swapping false and misinterpreted statistics, trying to make claims about how women are "the primary perpetrators of domestic violence!" and that "40% of all cases of rape reported by females are lies!" and that "women rape men the same amount, if not more than men rape women!". It seems like any time I enter a space on the internet where a female centered discussion is occurring, either about rape, domestic abuse, sexual harassment etc....there are men that immediately show up, and they try try to tell me about this apparent "epidemic" of female rapists and women that mercilessly beat their husbands. Instead of these men actually listening, they have made it their mission to accuse women of being liars about sexual assault or rape, and paint men as the victims of tyrannical females.

SO. I decided to try and find a book that discussed these men, particularly the "men's right's movement" or "MRM". This book gave me exactly what I was hoping to find. I wanted answers, and I think this book gave me many. It talks a lot about masculinity, privilege, our culture of violence, and the economic/ social changes that are rapidly occurring in our society today. The book discusses school shooters, the fathers rights movement, the MRM, domestic violence statistics, the working man, etc.

If you're interested in topics about violence, gender issues, oppression/privilege, masculinity, feminism, etc....I suggest you read this book. Sure, if you're a male, and white, and angry.....you probably won't like this book, but, maybe you won't like it because it is actually holding up a mirror, and you don't like what you see?

Three-of-Five
By George N. Wells
Fascinating book. What drives male behavior and, in particular, what makes many of us males act out the way we often do? The opening line I used references a study of Chimps that was cited in the book where researchers picked the third chimp in a troop of five (hence the Borg designator) who, after getting an artificial boost to his testosterone, did not challenge either of the top two chimps but beat on the bottom two more than he had before. Perhaps this experiment tells us more than we want to know because we tend to accept that the people in power deserve it (yeah, evolutionary biology at work) while taking out our frustration on those beneath us in the social hierarchy. Of course there were lots-and-lots of other revelations, but this one seemed pivotal to the whole book.

Definitely worth reading if Angry White Men puzzle you
By joolzie
As a (not-particularly-angry) white woman from southeast Michigan, I have come across my fair share of angry white men without ever really understanding them. Reading this book gave me some perspective that I don't think I'd considered before. It was an entertaining and engaging read, though perhaps a little preachy at times.

I find the negative reviews to be rather interesting, as many of them seem to agree that they are angry white men, and even agree with the author on some of the reasons for it, but I guess they don't like having it put out in the light of day by a liberal, Jewish, feminist male, New York sociology professor. In many places throughout the book, he states that these men have every right to be angry-- it's just that they're often taking out their anger on the wrong targets. It's unlikely that this book will change the mindset of any of those men (or the women who support them), but it offers a glimpse to the rest of us as to why these men are so angry, where they're coming from, and even some of the consequences of ignoring and/or not identifying them.

I feel that I've been given a greater understanding of angry white men in general, though of course individuals will vary, and I think that can only be helpful in finding a way to communicate and compromise.

The Truth About Girls and Boys: Challenging Toxic Stereotypes About Our Children, by Caryl Rivers, Rosalind C. Barnett

Caryl Rivers and Rosalind C. Barnett are widely acclaimed for their analyses of women, men, and society. In The Truth About Girls and Boys, they tackle a new, troubling trend in the theorizing of gender: that the learning styles, brain development, motivation, cognitive and spatial abilities, and "natural" inclinations of girls and boys are so fundamentally different, they require unique styles of parenting and education.

Ignoring the science that challenges these claims, those who promote such theories make millions while frightening parents and educators into enforcing old stereotypes and reviving unhealthy attitudes in the classroom. Rivers and Barnett unmake the pseudoscientific rationale for this argument, stressing the individuality of each child and the specialness of his or her talents and desires. They recognize that in our culture, girls and boys encounter different stimuli and experiences, yet encouraging children to venture outside their comfort zones helps them realize a multifaceted character. Educating parents, teachers, and general readers in the true nature of the gender game, Rivers and Barnett enable future generations to transform if not transcend the parameters of sexual difference.

Review

BRAVO! This is a much needed, informative, and engaging book. The authors, Rosalind C. Barnett (a highly respected research psychologist) and Caryl Rivers (a skilled journalist), take the reader on a critical and clarifying tour of claims about categorical, biologically-based sex differences used to justify the move towards more publicly funded single-sex schooling. This book is a significant contribution to an area of heated debate and policy struggle. Parents, teachers, and policy-makers can turn to it as a reliable guide through a thicket of hype and over-claiming. The authors do an excellent job of unpacking empirical assertions, exposing shabby "science," unfounded generalizations and jumps of logic.

(Barrie Thorne, Professor of Sociology, and Gender and Women's Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Author of Gender Play: Girls and Boys in School.)

The gloves are off. Rivers and Barnett provide a convincing case that much of what parents, teachers, and the general public know about differences between girls and boys is based on highly publicized accounts of shoddy and misleading science. They provide readers with an understanding of the ways girls and boys are similar and different and how we can use that knowledge to raise happy, healthy, and successful children.

(Diane F. Halpern, past-president, American Psychological Association, and author of Sex Differences in Cognitive Abilities (fourth edition))

A bracing antidote to conventional wisdom. Like Malcolm Gladwell, Rivers and Barnett take readers into the world of research and emerge with surprising and unsettling conclusions. Teachers, educators, parents, journalists, and researchers would do well to read this book before hopping on the bandwagon about the 'differences' between girls and boys.

(Jonathan Kaufman, Pulitzer-Prize-winning reporter and education editor at Bloomberg News)

The Truth About Girls and Boys is exactly that―the real story behind over-hyped claims of sex difference and their harming of girls and boys. Rivers and Barnett expose the sloppy journalism that has allowed pseudoscientific ideas to percolate into our collective beliefs about gender development. Parents, teachers, and policymakers will do well to read this book, to rescue today's girls and boys from false claims of 'hardwired' differences limiting their learning and stunting their futures.

(Lise Eliot, author of Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow Into Troublesome Gaps and What We Can Do About It)

Caryl Rivers and Rosalind C. Barnett's dissection of the ways tired stereotypes are being repackaged as 'science' is urgently important. It must be read immediately by parents, educators―anyone who believes children should develop their full intellectual and emotional potential.

(Peggy Orenstein, author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture)

The Truth About Girls and Boys is a must read for anyone vouchsafed with the upbringing, care, teaching, or social policy that impacts our most precious legacy: our children―girls and boys. We must read this 'game changing' book, ponder its meaning, and not put it down until we move from our present position of empty-minded acceptance to open-minded and critical thinking. Rivers and Barnett throw out a sturdy life preserver to bring us back from the harm of mangled pseudoscience to the shores of thoughtful, gender equitable understanding.

(William S. Pollack, author of Real Boys: Rescuing Our Boys from the Myths of Boyhood)

Rivers and Barnett provide insightful examples to show how sex stereotypes ranging from aggression to sexualized body images are based on inaccurate and often harmful generalizations. They make a powerful case against a key rationale for sex-segregated education – that girls and boys learn differently, and therefore should be taught differently and in sex segregated classes. Instead, they conclude that heterogeneous groups and attention to individuals will do more to maximize opportunities and improve society.

This is an excellent and important book, clearly written yet also packed with documentation.

Because of the topic and accessibility of the writing, parents and teachers should be encouraged to read this book.

Good book for parent to read!
By Yiyang Zhao
This is a quite good book. It talks about the gender difference between boys and girls. Some chapters in this book are contradict to what we believed before and I am glad that the author points them out. First thing I want to share after I read this book is the boys and girls are not that different as we thought before. In the first six weeks pregnancy, there is no difference between boys and girls as a embryo. Besides, based on the neuroscience technology, we know that the structure and function of the brain is similar between boys and girls. The second thing I'd like to share is we should never push too much expectation to our children. The external expectation from teachers and parents are so strong that the children would regard those expectations as their self-cognition. If a teacher say "Well, the math I gonna teach today is difficult for girls, but boys may think it is easy", the girls will have a self-implication that they cannot do as good as boys on math. Generally speaking, the girls have the physical ability to do as good as boys on math. However, the outer expectation to them limit their performance on many aspect. Things are same goes for boys. If parent say "you will never sing as our neighbor girl" to their son, then the boy would probably never dare to sing even though he might own the potential to be a singer. This book also mentions other aspect of boys and girls such as single-gender class and aggressive behavior and choice toys etc. All in all, it is worth to read, even though some of the research findings are old and not that sound.

The Truth About Girls and Boys: Challenging Toxic Stereotypes About Our Children (Hardcover)
By Chong Lin
This book is mainly about gender differences and some gender stereotypes. It covers a lot of areas such as single-sex education, caring, toys and math et al. The author of this book suggests that boys and girls are almost the same in many aspects. It may hurt them and limit their natural development if they are treated according to genders and are being separated in to "Blue" camp or "Pink" camp. We need to treat them as individuals and let them realize their own abilities in order to achieve their goals. Also it is essential for adults to stop putting stereotypical opinions on girls about their math study. Girls can also do well as boys in the field of math if they are interested in it, work hard on it, get enough encouragements and supports from others. However, this book still lacks enough evidences to support on its further practices about improving the situations in reality.

A must read for all roles in child development
By Britnee Weatherspoon
The book was very good! I chose to read the book for a child development class and I really enjoyed it. The book was very engaging and easy to read. There were many things that I knew prior to reading the book, however, I learned a lot that I had not already known. Although the book seemed to be biased, it opened up my mind to learning more about relationship development and gender roles and differences. There are many stereotypes between girls and boys and the book allowed for me to think about the different stereotypes that children internalize and how adults play a major role. I would recommend the book for anyone to read, especially those who interact with children and play an important role in child development (parents, teacher, caregivers, etc.) The book is not age specific and it could relate to all stages of development for both girls and boys.

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, by Nicholas Carr

Finalist for the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction: “Nicholas Carr has written a Silent Spring for the literary mind.”―Michael Agger, Slate

Finalist for the 2011 PEN Center USA Literary Award

“Is Google making us stupid?” When Nicholas Carr posed that question, in a celebrated Atlantic Monthly cover story, he tapped into a well of anxiety about how the Internet is changing us. He also crystallized one of the most important debates of our time: As we enjoy the Net’s bounties, are we sacrificing our ability to read and think deeply?

Now, Carr expands his argument into the most compelling exploration of the Internet’s intellectual and cultural consequences yet published. As he describes how human thought has been shaped through the centuries by “tools of the mind”―from the alphabet to maps, to the printing press, the clock, and the computer―Carr interweaves a fascinating account of recent discoveries in neuroscience by such pioneers as Michael Merzenich and Eric Kandel. Our brains, the historical and scientific evidence reveals, change in response to our experiences. The technologies we use to find, store, and share information can literally reroute our neural pathways.

Building on the insights of thinkers from Plato to McLuhan, Carr makes a convincing case that every information technology carries an intellectual ethic―a set of assumptions about the nature of knowledge and intelligence. He explains how the printed book served to focus our attention, promoting deep and creative thought. In stark contrast, the Internet encourages the rapid, distracted sampling of small bits of information from many sources. Its ethic is that of the industrialist, an ethic of speed and efficiency, of optimized production and consumption―and now the Net is remaking us in its own image. We are becoming ever more adept at scanning and skimming, but what we are losing is our capacity for concentration, contemplation, and reflection.

Part intellectual history, part popular science, and part cultural criticism, The Shallows sparkles with memorable vignettes―Friedrich Nietzsche wrestling with a typewriter, Sigmund Freud dissecting the brains of sea creatures, Nathaniel Hawthorne contemplating the thunderous approach of a steam locomotive―even as it plumbs profound questions about the state of our modern psyche. This is a book that will forever alter the way we think about media and our minds.

From Bookmarks Magazine
One of the major issues dividing the critics was whether Carr's claim that the Internet has shortchanged our brain power is, essentially, correct. Many bought into his argument about the neurological effects of the Internet, but the more expert among them (Jonah Lehrer, for one) cited scientific evidence that such technologies actually benefit the mind. Still, as Lehrer, in the New York Times Book Review, points out, Carr is no Luddite, and he fully recognizes the usefulness of the Internet. Other criticism was more trivial, such as the value of Carr's historical and cultural digressions--from Plato to HAL. In the end, Carr offers a thought-provoking investigation into our relationship with technology--even if he offers no easy answers.

From Booklist
Carr—author of The Big Switch (2007) and the much-discussed Atlantic Monthly story “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”—is an astute critic of the information technology revolution. Here he looks to neurological science to gauge the organic impact of computers, citing fascinating experiments that contrast the neural pathways built by reading books versus those forged by surfing the hypnotic Internet, where portals lead us on from one text, image, or video to another while we’re being bombarded by messages, alerts, and feeds. This glimmering realm of interruption and distraction impedes the sort of comprehension and retention “deep reading” engenders, Carr explains. And not only are we reconfiguring our brains, we are also forging a “new intellectual ethic,” an arresting observation Carr expands on while discussing Google’s gargantuan book digitization project. What are the consequences of new habits of mind that abandon sustained immersion and concentration for darting about, snagging bits of information? What is gained and what is lost? Carr’s fresh, lucid, and engaging assessment of our infatuation with the Web is provocative and revelatory. --Donna Seaman

Review
“A thought provoking exploration of the Internet’s physical and cultural consequences, rendering highly technical material intelligible to the general reader.” (The 2011 Pulitzer Prize Committee)

“A must-read for any desk jockey concerned about the Web’s deleterious effects on the mind.” (Newsweek)

“Starred Review. Carr provides a deep, enlightening examination of how the Internet influences the brain and its neural pathways. Carr’s analysis incorporates a wealth of neuroscience and other research, as well as philosophy, science, history and cultural developments ... His fantastic investigation of the effect of the Internet on our neurological selves concludes with a very humanistic petition for balancing our human and computer interactions ... Highly recommended.” (Library Journal)

“This is a measured manifesto. Even as Carr bemoans his vanishing attention span, he’s careful to note the usefulness of the Internet, which provides us with access to a near infinitude of information. We might be consigned to the intellectual shallows, but these shallows are as wide as a vast ocean.” (Jonah Lehrer - The New York Times Book Review)

“The best book I read last year ― and by “best” I really just mean the book that made the strongest impression on me ― was The Shallows, by Nicholas Carr. Like most people, I had some strong intuitions about how my life and the world have been changing in response to the Internet. But I could neither put those intuitions into an argument, nor be sure that they had any basis in the first place. Carr persuasively ― and with great subtlety and beauty ― makes the case that it is not only the content of our thoughts that are radically altered by phones and computers, but the structure of our brains ― our ability to have certain kinds of thoughts and experiences. And the kinds of thoughts and experiences at stake are those that have defined our humanity. Carr is not a proselytizer, and he is no techno-troglodyte. He is a profoundly sharp thinker and writer ― equal parts journalist, psychologist, popular science writer, and philosopher. I have not only given this book to numerous friends, I actually changed my life in response to it.” (Jonathan Safran Foer)

“This is a lovely story well told―an ode to a quieter, less frenetic time when reading was more than skimming and thought was more than mere recitation.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“The Shallows isn’t McLuhan’s Understanding Media, but the curiosity rather than trepidation with which Carr reports on the effects of online culture pulls him well into line with his predecessor . . . Carr’s ability to crosscut between cognitive studies involving monkeys and eerily prescient prefigurations of the modern computer opens a line of inquiry into the relationship between human and technology.” (Ellen Wernecke, - The Onion A.V. Club)

“The subtitle of Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains leads one to expect a polemic in the tradition of those published in the 1950s about how rock ’n’ roll was corrupting the nation’s youth ... But this is no such book. It is a patient and rewarding popularization of some of the research being done at the frontiers of brain science ... Mild-mannered, never polemical, with nothing of the Luddite about him, Carr makes his points with a lot of apt citations and wide-ranging erudition.” (Christopher Caldwell - Financial Times)

“Nicholas Carr has written an important and timely book. See if you can stay off the web long enough to read it!” (Elizabeth Kolbert, author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature, and Climate Change)

“Neither a tub-thumpingly alarmist jeremiad nor a breathlessly Panglossian ode to the digital self, Nicholas Carr’s The Shallows is a deeply thoughtful, surprising exploration of our “frenzied” psyches in the age of the Internet. Whether you do it in pixels or pages, read this book.” (Tom Vanderbilt, author, Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us))

“Nicholas Carr carefully examines the most important topic in contemporary culture―the mental and social transformation created by our new electronic environment. Without ever losing sight of the larger questions at stake, he calmly demolishes the clichs that have dominated discussions about the Internet. Witty, ambitious, and immensely readable, The Shallows actually manages to describe the weird, new, artificial world in which we now live.” (Dana Gioia, poet and former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts)

“The core of education is this: developing the capacity to concentrate. The fruits of this capacity we call civilization. But all that is finished, perhaps. Welcome to the shallows, where the un-educating of homo sapiens begins. Nicholas Carr does a wonderful job synthesizing the recent cognitive research. In doing so, he gently refutes the ideologists of progress, and shows what is really at stake in the daily habits of our wired lives: the re-constitution of our minds. What emerges for the reader, inexorably, is the suspicion that we have well and truly screwed ourselves.” (Matthew B. Crawford, author of Shop Class As Soulcraft)

“Ultimately, The Shallows is a book about the preservation of the human capacity for contemplation and wisdom, in an epoch where both appear increasingly threatened. Nick Carr provides a thought-provoking and intellectually courageous account of how the medium of the Internet is changing the way we think now and how future generations will or will not think. Few works could be more important.” (Maryanne Wolf, author of Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain)

A work which merits deep reading
By Shalom Freedman
The Internet has made the information- universes of all of us much larger. At the same time it has altered the way we read, and the way we pay attention. The major thesis of this work is that it has made us shallower creatures. In Carr's words," We want to be interrupted, because each interruption brings us a valuable piece of information... And so we ask the Internet to keep interrupting us, in ever more and different ways. We willingly accept the loss of concentration and focus, the division of our attention and the fragmentation of our thoughts, in return for the wealth of compelling or at least diverting information we receive. Tuning out is not an option many of us would consider. (p. 133-4)" This means in effect that our powers of concentration and contemplation, if not diminished all at once, are nonetheless put less to use. It means that we do not really take in much of what we read and see, but rather let it pass by as something new comes to attract and distract us. It too means according to Carr transformations in actual brain- structure. And he uses the results of cognitive brain studies to point out how excessive use of the Internet reshapes our brain- structure.

Carr argues that with the advent of reading humanity developed a different kind of neural structure. Reading which was an extension of story- telling enabled us to begin to speak to ourselves, to contemplate reality in deeper ways. The bookman mind is a deeper mind than the electronic - mind , despite MacLuhan's contrary take.

Still one might argue that we need not be the slaves of the predominant technology. It all depends upon the will, decision, determination of the individual. The horde may decide to operate in a certain way, but one has the power to shut the machine off. Or one has the power to turn away from the Net, and focus only on one text one wants to work with. Many of us are engaged in making these decisions all the time.
Still I would say that my own experience substantiates Carr's main thesis. I have wasted in the past few years far too much time, jumping from one thing to another.
Nonetheless there is no turning back from the Revolution which Carr considers to be certainly the greatest since the introduction of the Printing press, and perhaps greatest since the introduction of the Alphabet and the Number System.

Perhaps what is truly required is a 'proper mix of both ways of 'reading and seeing' of both 'modes of being' i.e. the short- term internet attention mode, and the longer book- concentration mode. And this as I sense that when many begin to feel an exhaustion from the jumping around, come to understand it does not really help them in pursuit of their main goal, there will be some reaction in the other direction.

Death by a thousand distracting cuts
By OwlSong
In this short but informative, thought-provoking book, Nicholas Carr presents an argument I've long felt to be true on a humanist level, but supports it with considerable scientific research. In fact, he speaks as a longtime computer enthusiast, one who's come to question what he once wholeheartedly embraced ... and even now, he takes care to distinguish between the beneficial & detrimental aspects of the Internet.

The argument in question?

- Greater access to knowledge is not the same as greater knowledge.

- An ever-increasing plethora of facts & data is not the same as wisdom.

- Breadth of knowledge is not the same as depth of knowledge.

- Multitasking is not the same as complexity.

The studies that Carr presents are troubling, to say the least. From what has been gleaned to date, it's clear that the brain retains a certain amount of plasticity throughout life -- that is, it can be reshaped, and the way that we think can be reshaped, for good or for ill. Thus, if the brain is trained to respond to & take pleasure in the faster pace of the digital world, it is reshaped to favor that approach to experiencing the world as a whole. More, it comes to crave that experience, as the body increasingly craves more of anything it's trained to respond to pleasurably & positively. The more you use a drug, the more you need to sustain even the basic rush.

And where does that leave the mind shaped by deep reading? The mind that immerses itself in the universe of a book, rather than simply looking for a few key phrases & paragraphs? The mind that develops through slow, quiet contemplation, mulling over ideas in their entirety, and growing as a result? The mature mind that ponders possibilities & consequences, rather than simply going with the bright, dazzling, digital flow?

Nowhere, it seems.

Carr makes it clear that the digital world, like any other technology that undeniably makes parts of life so much easier, is here to stay. All the more reason, then, to approach it warily, suspiciously, and limit its use whenever possible, since it is so ubiquitous. "Yes, but," many will say, "everything is moving so fast that we've got to adapt to it, keep up with it!" Not unlike the Red Queen commenting that it takes all of one's energy & speed to simply remain in one place while running. But what sort of life is that? How much depth does it really have?

Because some aspects of life -- often the most meaningful & rewarding aspects -- require time & depth. Yet the digital world constantly makes us break it into discrete, interchangeable bits that hurtle us forward so rapidly & inexorably that we simply don't have time to stop & think. And before we know it, we're unwilling & even unable to think. Not in any way that allows true self-awareness in any real context.

Emerson once said (as aptly quoted by Carr), "Things are in the saddle / And ride mankind." The danger is that we'll not only willingly, even eagerly, wear those saddles, but that we'll come to desire them & buckle them on ever more tightly, until we feel naked without them. And we'll gladly pay anything to keep them there, even as we lose the capacity to wonder why we ever put them on in the first place.

Most highly recommended!

Important topic, mostly well written
By Mortimer Duke
This is an extension of Carr's influential article "Is Google making us stupid?", and is in many ways a fascinating look at the possibility that the medium of the internet changes our ability to process information deeply. Carr is at his absolute best when he brings up the issue, pointing out what is at stake and drawing our intuitions out.

Word for word, this is not as interesting or well-written as his original article. In many places it tends to be stretched a bit thin -- which seems odd for a book on this topic. For example, since he is essentially expanding on an originally limited argument, he feels obliged to include a lot of well-worn history to expand the scope of media. We really don't need to know about Sumerian cuneiform or wax tablets or Greek philosophers (beyond the very obvious point that there is a history of media) for the argument he's making, since they don't fundamentally affect his argument.

Another weak point about the book is the writing on the brain and neuroplasticity. Since Carr is not a scientist himself, he doesn't have the background to write about this in a really authoritative way. What he has done is to work mainly off secondary (and tertiary) sources; basically taking for granted what other people have said. This shows through in a few areas where he relies too heavily on books such as Doidge's "The Brain that Changes Itself", already a pretty diluted look at neuroscience written by a psychoanalyst. If you want to know how reading and writing have changed the organization of the brain, there is a much better book out there called "Reading and the Brain" by Stanislas Dehaene. (a little digression here -- reading/writing have changed our perceptual mechanisms in the brain, while the internet is probably changing something like attentional control and executive function, so there are some important caveats to the phrase that "the medium is the message")

However, the chapter on memory was excellent, and brought me back into his argument. He makes the very important point (and one that won't be as obvious to most readers) that memory doesn't function like a hard drive; that instead it forms a central part of the way that we think. So there is a fundamental error in trying to "offload" our memory onto the web -- by not internalizing information, and instead thinking that we can just look at it later -- and one that we are probably not aware of.

Overall, I can't help but thinking that, despite his argument, it's a better world with the internet. Carr points out that the strategy that he used in writing the book was to rely on the best of both systems -- the fast internet for preliminary thinking and gathering sources, and quiet contemplation away from the internet to gather his thoughts and write the book. To have that option is something that is useful to be aware of.

Better than previously reviewed - Take it from an English PhD candidate
By J. C. Blanchard
Contrary to the opinion of the previous review, this book offers an insightful overview of the nuances Stevens' work touches upon. Included in this work is information regarding his own life, his struggle with politics and poetry, a look at the multiple personae he used as his 'voices' when writing, his link to the Romantic poets, his use of the seasons, etc. While some of these essays could be a bit longer (As I would like to see), they are written by some of the top contemporary critics of Stevens and Modern Poetry. If you are at all interested in Stevens, this is not a bad place to begin reading criticism. These essays provide excellent introductions into some of the questions lurking around Stevens' rather opaque poetry.

Good overall introduction to Wallace Stevens
By T. Tse
I must agree with the "English PhD candidate" reviewer. The Cambridge Companions are usually solid. Stevens' poetry is complex, and draws on many different fields such as painting and philosophy. The essays in this volume will shed light on how they influenced his poetry. Stevens' poetry also matured over time in very delicate ways. The essay "Stevens' late poetry" in this volume will help readers to appreciate these subtle changes.

However, I must caution that some essays read too much into the poetry. This is not a flaw of this book per se, but rather an unfortunate tendency in contemporary criticism. For example, the essay on how Stevens' view of God has gradually become a kind of "difference" seems to have too much Derrida lurking in the background.
