Useful reference guide for kitchen and bath residential construction and beyond

As a carpenter and someone who is completely remodeling their home, I found this an excellent resource guide. It is well illustrated, detailed and yet easy to understand. It has good descriptions of systems. Even though it is titled kitchen and bath and covered those areas and issues pertaining to them thoroughly, it also went beyond that into a general reference guide for home construction and systems. I would recommend this book.

NKBA does it again

Given that the NKBA Kitchen Planning book is my go-to resource for all things kitchen design, I expected the same kind of quality with the NKBA's latest release, and I got it. This book deals with construction and building systems (as the name implies) for the kitchen and bath. Some of this information builds on what you get with the Kitchen Planning book, but it also adds a lot of great new information.

Chapters 1 - 4 are short and sweet: how to gather your team, knowing where to get codes, foundations of a healthy home and energy efficiency. Chapter 5 builds on Chapter 4 with using natural energy (solar). From there the book delves into foundation needs and materials, then floors (from wood to steel to concrete) and on up the walls, both exterior and interior. From there it tackles doors, windows, roofing and surfaces.

Next the book turns to heating and cooling, air quality, water and drainage, equipment, electrical and finally lighting.

The book is fairly high level because it is aimed at a very specific audience, so you aren't going to find the general details that you might find in a more general book. It is also not a book for contractors or builders, but designers working with contractors and builders. But it does cover things you need to know for kitchen/bath construction, such as lumber, including cuts and quality in the flooring section, for instance, or constructing a good vapor barrier in the roof.

The book includes plenty of diagrams and pictures and plenty of resources if you need something more than the book has to offer. Another exceptional NKBA offering.

Good general overview of home construction ingredients

At first, when you see "Kitchen & Bath" in the title it is a bit confusing, because this book has little to do with kitchens and bathrooms. Instead it provides a general overview from a bird's perspective at 10,000 feet, of the various ingredients for building a home. It covers everything from lumber grading to tankless water heaters. Because there is so much to fit within 245 pages, none of these topics are covered in a great amount of detail. This book is excellent for a beginner, for example if you occasionally work on home DIY projects or if you want to learn about how homes are put together in a general sense. But if you already have significant experience with residential systems you will find the info too basic to be of much use. Overall, this book is nicely organized with excellent explanations and illustrations, so I would highly recommend it for a beginner.

A Great Read

I learned a lot thank you for sharing you personal experiences and I loved the poems. There was a point in my life where I carried all the pain from past relationships because of that nothing worked. I learned to love myself before I could love anyone else. Your book really helped me see it from a male perspective.

This book is fantastic! Mr McNutt is spot on with his empathetic style. The reader feels an immediate kinship with him. He pulls no punches with respect to owning your feelings and bevaviors. I highly recommend this book. It brought me rare peace after a recent heartbreak.

Read this if you've given in to the poor reviews

Some people are posting poor reviews based on the "complicated" recipes.... Perhaps if you have never ever cooked or meal prepped before they can be slightly daunting (and that's a stretch). However, they really aren't much different than other recipes you'd find in weight loss books. I have completed two week's worth of meal preps and each prep has taken less than two hours, but has saved me SO much time throughout the week.

In regards to the shopping lists and daily menus: YOU DON'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THEM EXACTLY! They actually state in the book (pg.72) that you can create your own menus and recipes and that theirs are guidelines/suggestions. They even include a brief 100-calories food list to make it easy to pair foods together. You don't have sprouts in your cupboard? Then move on to a different recipe. You don't like mushrooms? Don't use them. In my two weeks of meal preps I have not followed a single day to the tee, and have really only used six of the recipes (a couple of which I tweaked).

The whole point of the book is encourage the reader to think about their weight loss as a transformation of the body AND mind and that it's not simply a diet to get to your goal but then turn back to old habits.

If you're very rigid and take everything you read literally, then this might not be the book for you. However, if you are able to use the text as a roadmap, and be flexible and creative, then give it a try.

I have been following Chris and Heidi Powell's carb cycling diet for almost a year now. I have lost 75 pounds in 9 months and am in line for a loss of 100 pounds by my year mark. I have met Chris and Heidi Powell in person, as I was nearly cast for Extreme Weightloss before the show was cancelled, and they are genuine in wanting to help people lose weight.
