To the Table: A Spirituality of Food, Farming, and Community, by Lisa Graham McMinn

With the growing farm-to-table movement and popularity of local farmers' markets, we are becoming more conscious of where our food originates. This spirituality of eating and food helps us reflect on current realities and understand how eating forms our souls inwardly, upwardly, and outwardly. The author offers practical guidance on what it means to eat alone or in community with more intention, compassion, humility, and gratitude. She also tells the story of food as it transitions from seed to table. Sidebars contain gardening and food tips, recipes, and food preservation guides. End-of-chapter questions for individual and group use are included.

From the Back Cover
Eating with More Intention, Compassion, and Gratitude

"To the Table is a warm and wise invitation to practice eating as a spiritual discipline--not as an act of self-improvement but as a way of living out and delighting in the generous, abundant, just, sweet, and savory love of God."
--Rachel Marie Stone, author of Eat with Joy: Redeeming God's Gift of Food

"To the Table takes us on a practical and personal journey into the joys and trials of growing, cooking, preserving, and sharing food. Here we see that food is not reducible to a commodity but is instead the tasty medium of God's love for the whole creation. With inspiring and illuminating stories and astute cultural analysis, McMinn shows us how the whole of eating can be a sacramental act that brings healing to our hungry and hurting world. This beautifully written book is ideal for group study, and its recipes and cooking advice will encourage people to gather in kitchens and around tables to share in the grace of God."
--Norman Wirzba, Duke Divinity School; author of Food and Faith: A Theology of Eating

"To the Table is about dining devotionally, which feeds both body and soul. A deeply nourishing read."
--Joel Salatin, Polyface Farm

"If this book were a table, it would bow under the weight of its abundance. Filled with research, recipes, how-to tips, and personal narrative, To the Table will encourage faithful readers to head straight for their own gardens, farmers markets, pantries, and tables as they learn to eat more intentionally, more prayerfully, and with stronger community ties. With insights from sociology and wisdom from lived experience in family, church, and community, Lisa McMinn is an expert guide for those wishing to eat better, live better, and follow Christ more deeply."
--Jenell Paris, Messiah College

By Gordon
“To the Table” is a well written book that combines personal experience, practical knowledge and persistent research. The writing provides for the reader a confluence of pragmatic farming, pertinent statistics, and poignant spirituality with garlands of humor interspersed.

It is unusual to find a “how to” book that provokes thought without being preachy. A favorite recipe to tantalize the taste buds is found in each of the seven chapters. You will also find provocative questions that offer a chance for mental interaction as well as potential for both consideration and change.

McMinn, a wife, mother and grandmother weaves into the script numerous anecdotes that complete the text with tableaus of learning, failure, warmth and love. However, the book is much more than that. As a sociologist, the author brings in relevant information from both local and international sources that target inhumane work settings and shortcuts that compromise the quality of food produced.

The book is a partial journal of the author’s life. It speaks to the wealth of friendships, the support of family, and the road chosen.
Read the book. It will cause you to think, laugh and hope and to examine your own choices.

Read this book with others in your church
By Englewood Review of Books
Lisa Graham McMinn has written a delightfully earthy book that combines keen theological reflection about food and community with personal stories and recipes. By focusing on the practices that bring food to our table (e.g., gardening, preserving, cooking) To the Table emphasizes the central role that food plays in our lives, and challenges us to be more attentive to how we eat. Read this book with others in your church, let it guide you into conversations about food and eating.

Interesting
By Rebekah
A very interesting read. I did agree with many of her conclusions, from a Quaker perspective, of the importance of quality food, knowing where your food came from and how it was made, the love and care that goes into a meal and how much a family can and even needs to bond over daily meals and practice thankfulness. Jesus Himself did also talk extensively about food and used it to illustrate many things, that he is the bread of life and of all things 1 Corinthians 5 describes when we are not to associate with sexually immoral professing believers, that we are not even to eat with them. Why is eating so important? This book shows how and why. There really is a community aspect of eating. Now, is eating always have to from scratch, meaningful, thoughtful, quality and good for the earth? I think not, sometimes food is just food or God would not give directions to fast to pray or other reasons. Sometimes "learning the true cost of food and then choosing compassion and justice over convenience or thrift" is just not practical. A worthy goal and effort, but also expensive beyond what is time and financially possible. A very intresting look into a life and culture that is profitable for most people to glean from.
