Jack Kerouac, Scattered Poems (City Lights, 1971)

Over the few years Kerouac wrote, he dashed off a number of poems that managed never to get collected, many of them in letters to Allen Ginsberg and Neal Cassady. City Lights, with help from Ginsberg, compiled a small volume of these poems and released them some thirty years ago.

While a few of the works here (and, in some cases, a line or two within one of the works) shows the power and natural affinity for language that makes Kerouac one of the enduring figures of American literature, Most of what's here is solid evidence that, where uncollected poems are concerned, there's usually a reason why they weren't published in the first place. Perhaps it is the prominence of the author in question, but while reading most of this work, I got a sense of hopelessness, a pathetic (in the classic definition of the term) feeling of emptiness. Unlike both the surrealism and the jazz from which Kerouac and his fellow Beats drew their inspiration, and also unlike the authors
from that time who have been incorrectly labelled as Beats (Bukowski, Alfred Chester, to an extent Paul Bowles, etc.), Kerouac's material seems to lack either the underlying meaning or the sense of immediate purpose that separates the best of the aforementioned authors from their scads of less talented imitators.

One place in which Kerouac does shine here, though, is in a small selection of haiku at the end of the book. Kerouac was one of the first American authors to really grasp the spirit of English-language haiku, as mentioned in a brief intro to the book's last section. Kerouac quotes a few Basho haiku and bemoans the inability of English to imitate the free-flowing Japanese language, coming to the conclusion that the "seventeen syllable" rule should be dropped for American haiku (as most serious haiku writers and scholars in English have also done in the forty or so years since Kerouac originally composed the works here). In the haiku, where Kerouac is forced to work with tight lines and spare images, his gift comes through. Unfortunately, it does so in far too few other pieces in this book. **

Kerouac at the brink of the world

There are few times in the history of mankind that we can sit back and allow ourselves to be manipulated by a pure mad man (brilliant writer). Kerouac's poems allow the mind to travel to the brink of truth and reality and come back unharmed and ... enlightened ... Thank God for kerouac ... he makes the world a better place and his poems are subconcious unfiltered visions of real life. "Pull My Daisy" with Ginsberg is a masterpiece as is "Old Angel Midnight". here is one poem : TO EDWARD DAHLBERG
Don't use the telephone. People are never ready to answer it. Use Poetry.
And Jack Kerouac does use poetry ... he uses it to give insight into a world he knew so well.

Jack Kerouac "Scattered Poems"

I was happy to finally find a collection of Kerouac's poetry! I know his poems are out there, but they are hard to come by, at times. I have always had some admiration for artists of the beatnik movement. I decided to teach a mini-unit on the beat poets for a high school course; having a nice collection of poems as examples was key to the unit. This particular collection of Kerouac poems included some of his "Western haikus," which illustrated Kerouac's non-conformity in writing. Excellent little book to have!

Successful Communication a Lawyer’s Perspective

This book is not about how to set up a winning argument providing the best evidence and the best logical case. It is about getting what you want as you communicate with others. People are emotional beings that focus not just on weighing the presented evidence. People have self interests, they are prejudiced, there are emotions and desires, group associations, and then there’s body language, and to get what you want they have to like you, etc. When you argue a case in court, or at home or at work, or to any group of people, you have to consider all of that.

Very briefly; you have to prepare, you have to listen to the other, you have to understand the other, find common ground, and you have to be credible. Therefore you should not avoid emotions and your argument should be personal, and you must always be truthful. Our argument cannot be perceived as a threat or we will never be heard, and assault is not argument. He discusses how to deal with prejudice and hostility and tells us that sometimes losing is winning and sometimes an argument shouldn’t be made at all. He also mentions that telling personal stories is a good way of getting people to see things your way. In addition to advice and guidelines there’s also quite a bit of wisdom and personal opinions, some of which I agree with and some of which I don’t agree with.

One thing I object to is that he sometimes overextends his perspective. For example, there are arguments, or communications, which should avoid emotions and for which the people involved and even their perceived credibility should not matter. I am talking about peer review in natural science and mathematical discourse, which I see as the best path towards “truth”. In that case only the evidence matter and the data and mathematical derivations speak for itself. However, that is outside of his expertise, like so much else that is outside of his expertise. That’s why I titled my review “A Lawyer’s Perspective”.

That does not mean it is not a good book. The book is filled with useful insights and I learned a lot from the book. One of the things I learned from this book is that if I know a lot about a subject and I am arguing with someone who’s very misinformed but stubborn I must resist the temptation to be patronizing, or to crush them. My goal should be to inform them, not to make them hate me. That was just one of many examples of what I’ve learned reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

Enlightened Book on strategically getting what you really want - appealing to a higher sense of good and love

This is a book on arguing written by a lawyer, but it is sooo much more than that. It is a book on deciding on the outcome you want, and being enlightened, loving, human and decent in your pursuit of that goal. Having gotten divorced in a legal system where honesty was a losing strategy, I loved seeing that the strategies in this book (written in 1986) might have once worked in a better justice system of a different time. However, this is a book that is almost about enlightenment - about arguing to express love, about arguing to get an outcome that brings you closer to a party rather than increasing distance, about arguing to win something decent. I wish this was required reading for all lawyers and judges, and for all parties to a lawsuit, to elevate the level of the discussion and to bring the focus back on what really is desired, rather than the common course of "the lawyers made $300k and no real results got achieved" that is often the outcome of lawyer brokered contentiousness.

a non-standard approach in dealing with oponents of seemingly superior intelligence

Using the paradigms in this book, I have conquered many opponents I was reluctant to deal with before due to (mostly) fear. The author has a non-standard approach to creating argumentative energy seemingly out of nothing. If you have the patience to wade through his tree-hugging stuff you will become empowered just by reading some paragraphs about the human weaknesses. If you don't understand what tree-hugging means, it may also be the key to your inability to win some arguments before and is key to unlocking your potential.
Once we understand how to handle our weaknesses and use the power of higher moral ground, truth and integrity we become invincible.
Btw, if you simply want to learn about logical fallacies - get a school book. Simply knowing the logical fallacies didn't help him much in the court cases he tried. He is just cynical enough to convey the reality of life but is not fixated on it while providing all the tools to prepare you for the B.S. that gets thrown at you every day.
There's another book I know of that uses eastern philosophy and some martial arts techniques in dealing with problems - "Aikido in Everyday Life: Giving in to Get Your Way" by Terry Dobson and Victor Miller. In some ways the books are identical.

This book began as a series of lectures that I delivered between 1983 and 1994 at the conferences and seminars of my and my husband’s organization The Jefferson School of Philosophy, Economics, and Psychology. Subsequent to their delivery, the lectures appeared as a series of pamphlets. At the urging of my husband and others, I have agreed to allow my pamphlets to be put together in the form of a book, in the belief that their content can be of value to readers interested in psychology and psychotherapy.

My lectures, now the chapters of this book, cover a variety of topics: The Psychological Requirements of a Free Society, Understanding the Subconscious, Anger, The Obsessive-Compulsive Syndrome, The Art of Introspection, Toward a Lasting Romantic Relationship (in two parts), Happiness Skills, and The Role of Philosophy In Psychotherapy. In addition, the book contains an interview with me concerning my views on psychotherapy.

All of my lectures are the product of many years of experience in the practice of psychotherapy, first in New York City and then in southern California. That experience was (and still is) aided by theoretical knowledge derived from a variety of sources. I was initially exposed to many of these in the course of earning a master’s degree in personality theory before earning my doctorate in clinical psychology. Among them have been Silvano Arrieti, Leon Salzman, Alfred Adler, and Karen Horney. And, despite many major points on which I strongly disagree with his system, I must include Sigmund Freud, who identified the enormous role of the subconscious mind in human psychology. I also want to acknowledge a major philosophical influence coming from the writings of Ayn Rand.

Amazing insights into my own mind.

The following is a summary of what Edith Packer says in this book.

If emotions could speak, they would say these things:

1. Fear: My existence is under threat.
2. Anxiety: I feel inadequate. I doubt myself.
3. Anger: Someone has been unjust towards me.
4. Hostility: I doubt myself now/I feel inadequate. Therefore, I hereby accuse this person/group here for making me feel that way. 5. Now it is a case of "this person/group is being unjust towards me".
5. Chronic & covert hostility: This person has a positive trait. That is not a good thing. Points must be scored. Said person ought to feel discomfort, guilt or self doubt.
6. Depression: I want something, but I don't think I can ever have it.
7. Distrust: [Self explanatory]. This person cannot be trusted.
8. Momentary envy: I want that. I wish I had it. I ought to act to earn/deserve it someday.
9. Chronic envy: Strong people are evil. They violate my rights. They are just lucky. They just have "connections".
10. Happiness: I have achieved that which I acted to gain and keep.
11. Love (varying degrees of): I love valuing this person who values me.

It is not wrong to feel, nor are emotions always right. Emotions can be false alarms or repressed unnecessarily, neither of which are desirable nor avoidable in the long term. The healthy strategy to deal with emotions is to:

1. first translate it into abstract narrative as listed above,
2. and then add specifics to the narrative above as to who/what is causing the emotion,
3. and then see if the emotion is legitimate or a false alarm.

If the emotion is a false alarm, fear not. Just as our senses delude us with illusions about the real world (e.g. optical illusions, auditory illusions, feelings of phones vibrating, or insects/reptiles crawling), emotions can be illusions too with no basis in a factual evaluation of reality. False emotions should be realized as such before we start slowly and habitually ignoring them.

If the emotion has a legitimate basis, then do not repress it. Venues must be sought, and actions must be chosen to react to real emotions. (e.g. righteous anger against real injustice). There is no need to be guilty for feeling emotions with a basis in reality.

The bottomline is to always seek the reasons for your emotions, because if left unchecked, emotions can take a life of their own, and become a "floating abstraction" in your mind with no cause or narrative attached to it.

That is what Edith Packer teaches in this book. Even before I read this book, I used to do the tips said in this book. It was for this reason I was able to retain my sanity in high stressful situations.

A Brilliant Book! The Techniques Work!

I've read Dr. Packer's new book, and I've also had the pleasure of knowing her and reading the original pamphlets upon which this book is based. I can tell you first-hand that her ideas and methods work. They've had a profound influence on my life. They helped me to discover a career that I love and a relationship that I treasure. I highly recommend "Lectures on Psychology" to anyone who wants to live life to the fullest and achieve a high level of happiness.

The lectures describe Dr. Packer's theories and methods, many of which are original and ground-breaking. Throughout the narrative the author clarifies and illustrates her points with numerous examples from her clinical practice. The result is a book that offers new and important concepts for professionals in the field, as well as a remarkably easy-to-read text for laymen to understand and digest.

In a world awash with irrationality, as our world seems to be, we are prone to suffer at least some degree of psychological damage. Starting in our formative years and continuing into adulthood, we can be pulled down into the quicksand of inexplicable emotional reactions, fear of failure, self-doubt, anxiety, debilitating anger, and other psychological downslides. Dr. Packer's work provides a lifeline to the solid ground of reason, self-esteem, values, and the pursuit of happiness, where human life thrives.

One of Dr. Packer's many insights that I found to be extremely helpful is her identification of "happiness skills," i.e., her therapeutic techniques for helping a patient to overcome his fears, to think for himself, to identify his values, and then to take action toward achieving them.

Another breakthrough concept is the way in which Dr. Packer demystifies emotions. She explains how emotions are not causeless, and how they can be traced back to past evaluations we've made. This puts our emotions within our cognitive control to understand, to evaluate, and, if necessary, to change.

All of her methods put us in control of our lives in a fundamental way and help us to achieve self-confidence and happiness.

In giving us the psychological tools to create a healthy mental state, Dr. Packer also gives us the necessary foundation of a healthy political state and society. She shows how to become the kind of person that is suited to living in a free society---a person who is self-sufficient, able to take responsibility for his own life, and supremely eager, confident, and happy to be the master of his own fate.

This is a book that applies and integrates the philosophy of reason to the field of psychology. In doing so, it is a pivotal work in our journey toward a new Age of Enlightenment, i.e., toward a rebirth of the ideas of reason, individualism, and freedom. For a free society to exist, we not only have to have rational philosophical, political, and economic ideas. We also have to have healthy individuals who possess the mental resources to live by reason, to be self-reliant, to take care of themselves, and to prosper and thrive in a free society. Such individuals embrace their freedom and wouldn't have it any other way. "Lectures on Psychology" paves the way toward this brighter future for the individual and for society.

Wise. Kind. Generous.

I just bought this book and read it fairly quickly. It is such an interesting and original book that I wanted an overview; I will be looking at it more carefully and thinking a good deal about some of the chapters.

But if I were to give it a one-word review, the word would be 'wise'. There is a quality of wisdom, experience, thoughtfulness, calm maturity about this book. I feel she is someone who would bring a lifetime of thoughtful experience to the therapeutic setting.

If I could have two words - add 'kind'. She says in the book that some people consider her judgmental, and the implication is that this is harsh or unkind. I could not disagree more. She is certainly firm in her views. But her views are amply supported with evidence and logic. But there is a kindness about the tone of the book; I feel I could tell her anything and she would gently help me work through the issue.

Generous. There is generosity and openness in the way she lets us deeply into her thinking and the background of her treatment procedures.

I like this book a lot. I like this woman a lot.

As funny as watching a baby repeatedly punch himself in the face

Termeer has done something for us akin to taking a hatchet to the magical Narnian wardrobe. He has blown open a passageway into the impossible mind of an ADHD, socially-abstruse, well-travelled, world-worn, circumcised Gentile. Reading his haphazard collection of thoughts and stories feels like peering into a world where Vonnegut and Douglas Coupland collaborated with the screenwriters of Arrested Development; disjointed narrative, random madness, political satire, and overall hilarity ensue.

The reader must be willing to overlook some misspelled words, poor punctuation and the occasional lack of coherency, but if he can stomach the errors he will find himself immersed in an experience as riveting and painfully funny as listening to your half-drunk uncle shamelessly tell you about the time he lopped off a testicle with a pair of pruning shears.

Laugh out loud funny ! You can't make this stuff up!

This book is laugh out loud funny and truly entertaining. Every single story that was shared by Termeer felt familiar and like I had heard each story a couple times before ...but this time didn't have to hear Josh's crackily,dry, monetone voice that's sounds like nails on a chalkboard at times, which made the story telling much more enjoyable!

More commas per dollar than any other publication in history

There really isn't any GOOD reason to read Sublime Absurdity. But the best reason is for sheer punctuation density. You can't get this many commas in anything less than a 500+ page novel. And what's that going to run you? 10, 12, 15 dollars? Just 99 cents bought me enough commas to last me 5 or 6 years!
