Salon Business: How to Manage a Salon in Good Times and Bad is a good book to have on hand whether business is thriving or you’re having sleepless nights worried about your business. There are tons of things to juggle when you manage and/or own a salon; this book gives you the tools to balance them with ease.
This book covers EVERYTHING—from managing your staff to retail products to marketing your business to saving it when it’s going under. Sometimes, it is time for a remodel or to move your salon’s location—and, yes, sometimes it may be time to close those doors. But don’t throw in the towel without reading this book!
First things first, have you thought about your salon’s heartbeat? Read the chapter “Knowing Your Salon’s Heartbeat.” You and your stylists are a team. Merging your vision for the salon with the things that drive your employees brings life and purpose to your salon, motivating your employees in a way that keeps all happy and excited to come to work. This chapter includes some great ideas for how to do this.
There’s a chapter on how to deal when a big-chain salon opens in the neighborhood (“How You Can Compete with the Big Chains”). And, oh, the chapters on retail, such as “How Your Distributor Can Grow Your Business” are eye-opening! Your distributor and your retail products can take your salon from barely getting by to profitable in just months. So many ideas in chapters like “Retail Sales Secrets” and “Retail Store No-No’s.” And do you know how important LIGHTING is? The chapters on lighting will BLOW YOUR MIND. Such simple changes that can make a huge difference in client satisfaction and sales. And do you have an accountant? If you don’t, you should. Read the chapter “An Accountant Can Save Your Business.”
Salon Business is full of inspirational ideas to get your excitement back—ideas beyond going to happy hour after work to drown your stress in a margarita. If you need an immediate pep talk, read the chapter “Pull Yourself Out of a Professional Rut.”
This book will guide you to success from the ground up—once you’ve figured out what is hindering business and what you need to do, there’s a chapter on it in here, chock full of step-by-step ways to achieve your goals. If your salon is stuck in the ‘80s and people are afraid they’ll leave your salon smelling like Aqua Net, read the chapters on remodeling your salon. They are CRAZY DETAILED with ideas and budget info.
In fact, this whole book is CRAZY FULL of step-by-step ideas to run a salon with heart and success. A great companion is the Salon & Booth Rental Employee Handbook, a book you can give to each employee that even includes a printed agreement for each employee to sign.
An essential resource for every salon manager/owner.
