I learned a great deal about how to disappear
By Gretchen Tremoulet
This is the story of two early ‘70s radicals (Mary Whittaker and Bobby DeSoto), their lives in hiding for 18 years, and Mary’s son (Jason) in his late teen years as he searches for his mother’s past. It is engaging, usually fast-paced, and feels real. The three main characters, as well as some of the supporting cast, are well-developed and complex. I learned a great deal about how to disappear, develop a new identity, survive the psychological stress as well as the practical challenges of this lifestyle. Also a great deal more than I wanted to know about the music of the ‘60s and ‘70s – it had so many more nuances and sub-sub-sub categories than I ever imagined, and an array of technologies (Jason, a very bright boy, was into it). I had no idea there was so much more of it available from clandestine sources than was ever released. Although I knew napalm was a terrible thing, I learned that it was even worse than I knew. But mostly I walked in the shoes (and heads) of Mary, Bobby, and Jason for decades.

Well done thoughtful complex characters capturing the protestors of the 60's & 70's and prices paid.
By Rhonna
Interesting throwback to the protestors of the Late 60's & 70's, realistically captures the lifestyle, communes, idealism & high prices paid. Bringing the characters into the present added an honest sadness contrasted with the current youth and the switching back & forth between present & past connected the paths.

Great book, but ending peters out
By Verita
This is a good read - very good attention to details, informative, a little repetitive in the way that political people can be -- some of the characters just repeat what others have said, but that is not hard to believe. Mary and Bobby create new lives for themselves after a radical act goes wrong. The book mostly follows Mary's progress toward a "normal" life, with a son and a new, bland identity. In places, Mary seems like a split personality, and this is a nice touch that could have been more extensively used. My big complaint with this book is that the ending was a real disappointment. All that build-up and then it's over so soon, without any real satisfaction between the characters, or any telling of their eventual fates. Also, the character of Mary's son was a little too much, too intelligent, too competent for a 15-year-old vinyl head. It seems that Spiotta just gave up on the book at this point, and that is too bad. It could have been great, but after a long, fraught journey, this book really needed a strong ending.
